Meet Sam Lichtveld, President of the Interfraternal Council

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Name: Sam Lichtveld
Year: 2013
Major: Business Management and Cellular and Molecular Biology
Hometown: Cumming, Georgia

What are you involved in around campus?
I am currently the President of the Interfraternal Council, a board that oversees the actions and events of all of the social greek fraternities on campus. Also, I am the President of Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed community service fraternity dedicated to inspiring our members to become young leaders in the community, to foster friendship amongst each other and to help the New Orleans community through various service projects.

What is your favorite thing to do on campus?
My favorite thing to do on campus is simply sit at a table with my friends outside the LBC and laugh about recent events in our lives.

How do you balance out time to do everything?
There is a funny saying I was told when I came to Tulane: “Good grades, Parties, and Sleep. Pick two.” I can honestly say that I chose to not sleep. Between schoolwork, a night job, IFC, APO and hanging out with friends, I do not have much time to get a full night of sleep. I survive mainly by napping every now and then when my schedule allows.

Any advice for students looking to get involved?
My advice to anyone looking to get involved is to go for it. Whenever I didn’t finish all of the food on my plate, my dad would bitterly say “well, its already paid for”. We as Tulane students get a fee every year that goes toward funding clubs, Greek organizations, intramural teams, etc. The way I see it, you have paid for all of these organizations, so you might as well get involved and see what they have to offer. Tulane has over 100 clubs and organizations; there is bound to be one that you like. If by some chance there isn’t a single club you like, then go make your own. You will be surprised at how many students at Tulane share the same interests as you.

What is your favorite place to eat in New Orleans and what do you order?
I am a big foodie. There are so many great restaurants in this city. It would be impossible to choose one. Emeril’s NOLA has an amazing duck dish that goes well with the never ending cornbread. Dat Dog has a crawfish sausage that only gets better when topped with Andouille sauce. Ralph’s on the Park has the best brunch menu in this city. And do not get me started on Felipe’s. The amount of great food in this city is overwhelming.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself working in a veterinary clinic in uptown New Orleans. At the end of the day I can come home to a humble household.

Any advice for finals preparation since it’s that time of year again?
The best advice that I can give for finals is study. It doesn’t matter if the exam is tomorrow or next week. The sooner you know the information the better you will do.
