How to Rock Swimsuit Season at Any Size

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Swimsuit season aka the most dreadful time of the year for many women, young and old alike. It sneaks up on you when you least expect it.

You are minding your own business while shopping at your local Target when, suddenly, there it is – the dreadful swimsuit section. You feel nauseous as you realize that you are in need of a new swimsuit, hating yourself for eating that stupid third slice of pizza last night.
This dreaded feeling is not uncommon. This season can be scary. However, there are swimsuits for every body type so that all women, no matter what size they are, can rock their swimsuits. I have compiled a short guide to swimsuit buying, with advice for different body types.

Petite: For a petite body, beware of oversize prints and straps that can overwhelm a delicate frame. If you want to elongate your body, a plunging neckline or halter-top is the way to go. While a little padding gives a small chest some oomph, it is important not to overdue it or you will look like you are about to topple over. As for elongating your legs, opt for high-cut bottoms, which will make your legs look like they go on for miles. Check out this string bikini from Victoria’s Secret.

Curvy: Hey you with the curves! Don’t hide them. Flaunt them. If your tummy is the problem area, hide flaws and accentuate your assets with a one-piece suit or bottoms that give you coverage, and use ruching distract the eye from the waist. The stylists at Marie Claire warn curvy women to avoid skimpy suits and opt for wide bands “to keep the look streamlined”.  Check out this adorable halter one -piece from Lands’ End.

Athletic: If you have an athletic build, go for bright colors that will “highlight your most shapely assets”. If you are looking to create curves, opt for big prints that will break up a straight silhouette. Feminine accents will help to draw attention away from your athletic build. Look for sequins, ruffles, and big prints. All will give you a shapelier figure. Avoid vertical stripes, dark colors and solids that will minimize instead of create curves. Make sure to purchase swimsuits that will endure any strenuous activity you intend to do. Check out this feminine bikini from Victoria’s Secret.
