How to be Everyone’s Mom

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Every group of schoolchildren needs a teacher, every college dorm needs an RA, and every friend group needs a mom friend. If you are on the verge of becoming the mom friend, which is a highly respected and needed position in friendships, simply follow the following tips to solidify your role as mom.

  1. Be Prepared! Just as any mother would suggest, your purse or backpack should always contain Band-Aids for your sweet friends who get paper cuts, Tums and Advil for those bellyaches and headaches, and extra hair ties in case the humidity takes control and no one’s straightened hair is safe.
  2. Need any snacks? Have you ever felt somewhat embarrassed, but also extremely grateful when your mom offers your friends snacks and drinks every ten minutes? Well, now is your time to shine as the “hostess with the mostess” making sure that the hot chocolate has just enough marshmallows and the pizza doesn’t burn the roof of your friends’ mouths. Don’t worry too much though because you have the Advil in case of any burns!
  3. Designated Driver Possibly the most stereotypical of all mom duties is the designated driver. Any night on the town can become a little too rambunctious if there isn’t someone like you to take the reins and the steering wheel driving everyone home safely. A major key in becoming the designated driver mom is truly believing that you have the ability to take care of your lovely friends when they need it most. “I don’t want to leave yet!” is an extremely common response from friends who aren’t quite ready to give into their mom/friend, but as long as you persevere and assure your friends that you are there for them, nothing will stop you from being a super mom!
  4. Always be there for a hug If there is one mom tip that takes the cake over any other it is looking out for your friends’ overall wellbeing on a day-to-day basis. From “good morning” texts to asking if they made it home safe, mom friends always remember to put their buddies ahead of themselves. By standing up for a friend if someone talks about her behind her back or simply comforting a friend after an extremely long day, anyone can become the mom friend that we all need in our lives.
