Whether it’s a birthday, an anniversary, or just to say “I love you”, gifts can be a great way to express that you care about someone. However, when you’re at college and away from your family and friends, it gets a little bit harder to give gifts. Sure, we can ship them something and have it show up in a boring brown box in 5-7 business days. But, if you’re looking for something with a bit more pizazz or flair, I’ve compiled five ways to give gifts when you’re not with the actual person you want to give a gift to.

  1. Send them flowers or an edible arrangement.

  2. Get them a subscription box. Subscription boxes come for all different kinds of interests (makeup, cause-based organizations, or candy). As a bonus, they get a gift each month!

  3. Buy them a plant, like a blueberry bush or a lemon tree. Local florists will deliver these, and they make a great garden addition. You can also watch it grow for years to come (assuming you have a green thumb).

  4. Check out Cheryl’s Cookies or Jeni’s Ice Cream. Both of these are companies that deliver cookie boxes or assorted ice cream flavors in a fun package. If you’re looking for a sweet treat, this is the way to go.

  5. Send them something sentimental and from the heart, like a lovebook or letters with prompts. Googling “Letters to…” can give you writing prompts, funny or serious, that say more than just your average celebration message.

Hope these ideas help you tell your mom, your best friend, or anyone what they mean to you.
