5 Women in Television Who Will Inspire You Today!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

There’s a lot of really great women on television right now. When girls look to role models on tv they don’t see damsels in distress anymore. Now we see strong, independent women who have already taught us so much. These are the 5 most inspiring women on television today.

Olivia Pope from Scandal: Olivia Pope is an amazing role model. She might have gotten herself into some sticky situations, but she has always been smart enough to make the right move at the right time. As a leader of a legal team in Washington DC and as a member of the President’s campaign staff, among other positions, Olivia has held her own in a man’s world, and dominated. She always tried to look out for others, and when her own life became complicated she was able to put those matters aside to help her friends. Olivia Pope showed us that we are all capable of being strong, powerful women, no matter what obstacles we may face.

Temperance Brennan from Bones: Dr. Brennan is one of the smartest women on television right now. Though she may have trouble expressing her emotions, her brain has brought her all the way to DC where she assists the FBI with intense forensic cases. She is strong, stubborn, and true to her beliefs. Even after all the death she has seen and all the sadness she has endured, she has stayed grounded. Dr. Brennan is the one to call when everything has gone to pieces and we need someone cool headed to help us. She is also an inspiration for any girls desiring to enter the STEM field, being a forensic anthropologist. Brennan shows us that women can be anything they want and that we are all smart enough to follow our goals.

Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation: Like Olivia Pope, Leslie Knope is also involved in government, though on a smaller scale. Even when she’s only fighting for a park in her small Indiana town, Leslie is fierce and independent. She is also infinitely optimistic. She knows as long as she works her hardest things will work out. Leslie is also very loyal to her friends and family. Leslie tried her hardest at everything she put her mind to, from running for city councilwoman to celebrating her female friendships on Galentine’s Day. Leslie has taught us that passion and positivity can get us everywhere we dream of.

Annalise Keating from How To Get Away With Murder: Annalise is one of the toughest characters on television. She never takes no for an answer, unless it’s the answer she wants. She knows how to stand up for herself and for others. When she takes a case, Annalise will fight for them until she wins. She has made her share of mistakes in life, but she is able to admit that and own up for them. Another thing that makes Annalise so amazing is her ability to be vulnerable. In How To Get Away With Murder we see her at her strongest, and at her absolute weakest. She demonstrates that it is okay to fall apart a little bit sometimes, and she shows us how to put ourselves back together afterwards.

Jess Day from New Girl: Jess is a quirky girl who loves to love. She shows us there is nothing wrong with letting out the kid inside of us and just having fun. Jess has had to deal with getting dumped, getting fired, friendship drama, family drama, and so much more, but throughout all that she has had a smile on her face. Jess is always there for her friends. She will go to any lengths to make others happy. That being said, Jess has also shown us how to put our own happiness first, which can be very difficult. Jess is very sensitive and reminds us that listening to Taylor Swift and crying while watching Love Actually is the perfect cure for a broken heart, whatever or whoever the cause may be.
