Winter Activities in Boston

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tufts chapter.

Looking for some fun off-campus winter activities? Trying to escape from the library for more than a five minute run to Hodgdon? Has watching all of your favorite holiday movies to procrastinate filled you with holiday cheer?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, check out what you should check out the following recommendations for fun winter diversions in Boston …

The Frog Pond: Looking for a creative date idea? Take your cutie ice-skating on the famous Frog Pond. Located in Boston Common, one of nation’s oldest public parks, a visit to the Frog Pond will give you an opportunity to get some fresh air and exercise – two important things that many of us neglect during exam season! Plus, is there any better excuse to hold your crush’s hand than for some extra support while doing figure eights on the ice? Looking to continue the date on terra firma? Stop by The Frog Pond Café to warm up with a quick hot cocoa. For an even romantic experience, visit the Frog Pond at night – there are sure to be an abundance of twinkling and sparkling lights during this time of year.

Volunteering: Want to do some good this holiday season? Get a group of your girlfriends together before heading home for break and stop by The Women’s Lunch Place on Newbury Street. The motto of this shelter is “dignity is everything,” which is exemplified by the way in which the women are treated like guests by the volunteers who serve as their hosts. Volunteering tasks include serving the women a hot lunch, and organizing a closet from which the guests can take warm clothing to help them keep from getting sick during the cold winter months.

The Nutcracker: It wouldn’t be Christmas in Boston without this holiday tradition! If you’re looking for a sophisticated night out on the town, this is definitely the thing to do. After all, what is more high-class (and girlier) than going to a ballet at Boston’s iconic Opera House with your friends? While you’re in Boston, be sure to go out for a nice dinner in the area after the show (and, for those Collegiettes of age, there are plenty of fun bars nearby!) Bonus: Ticket sale prices are reduced for groups of 5 or more.

L.A. Burdick Chocolate: Sure, you can get hot chocolate anywhere, but the atmosphere at Burdick’s on Newbury Street will have you coming back for a second cup. The big, cozy chairs in the corner are also a great place to study if you’re looking to get off campus. Also, Burdick pastries serve as great pick-me-ups after a long day of holiday shopping on Newbury Street – be sure not to leave without trying one!
