Over the course of the past week, Angie Epifano’s personal account of her own rape has reached thousands via Twitter, Facebook, e-mail, and word-of-mouth. Angie went to Amherst College, a NESCAC institution very similar to Tufts. During the Spring Semester of her Sophomore Year, Angie was raped by a fellow student in an on-campus dormitory. After being assaulted, Angie experienced a period of intense pain, sadness, and shame, as is common among survivors of sexual abuse.
Take Back the Night is a national movement whose goal is to raise awareness about sexual violence. They aim to help women feel safer in their own communities through their outreach programs and events. This Thursday, October 25th, Tufts’ Panhellenic Council will be hosting a local Take Back the Night event at 9 PM on the Tisch Library Roof. The evening will include survivors’ stories, and a presentation by the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC). In addition, there will be a performance by one of Tufts’ a cappella groups, as well as a candle light vigil to honor and recognize those in our lives who have been victims of sexual assault.
We cannot change what victims of sexual assault have lived through, but we can help make sure that similar tragedies do not befall more college students. Please come Take Back the Night on the Tisch Library Roof this Thursday evening, and join Tufts’ Panhellenic Council and your fellow Tufts students in the effort to raise awareness concerning the issue of rape and sexual violence both on our campus and in our community.
RSVP to the event on Facebook.
