The Six Most Powerful Women in Television

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tufts chapter.

Pretty recently, I’ve become inspired by the female television characters on my favorite shows. They all have a strength that is vital for audiences to see. Unfortunately, words like “evil” or “bossy” can follow the term “powerful women.” To me, being powerful does not mean taking over countries or putting people down; it means having confidence and control in your life. A powerful woman never apologizes for who she is, and I try to live by those words. I have compiled a (short) list on female characters that personally inspire me to become a better Collegiete.

Disclaimer: If there is woman missing that you think should be on this list, chances are I don’t watch the show that character is in (sorry Game of Thrones fans).

1)   Claire UnderwoodHouse of Cards

Probably the most ruthless of the women on this list, Claire destroys her opponents without even changing her facial expression. However, during the second season we see her vulnerability and regret for her past choices. She shows that even powerful and seemingly put-together women have struggles and meltdowns.

2) Louise BelcherBob’s Burgers

Even though Louise is only 9, she certainly packs a punch. Louise already has complete self-awareness and self-confidence, often devising schemes to get her way. Sure, she might not be the most mature, but she certainly knows how to succeed.

3) Joan HollowayMad Men

No one knows how to play the system quite like Joan. Living in the 1960’s, Joan runs the advertising agency she works for without having the title of doing so. Whenever the business starts to fail, everyone knows that Joan will save the day. Even though her priority is herself, she will always help a coworker in need.

4) Leslie KnopeParks and Recreation

Leslie inspires me because she shows that you do not have to be ruthless to be powerful. Leslie loves to have fun at work and can come across as being very goofy. Even though she is career-oriented, she prioritizes her friends above work and has a positive outlook on life..

5) Mindy Lahiri from The Mindy Project

Mindy might not have everything figured out in her life, but she owns it. When she makes mistakes, she immediately bounces back. Even when she faces obstacles, Mindy is unapologetically herself.

6) Blair WaldorfGossip Girl

What’s a list of powerful women without the Queen B herself? Blair is heartless, sassy, and intimidating while never faltering from her modern day Audrey Hepburn style. Despite her flaws, Blair’s strength is reflected in the way she protects and loves her friends even when they make mistakes.
