Fun Fact: I play the Spoons

How does it feel coming on to campus as a Facebook celebrity and being identified by everyone around you?

It’s a very interesting thing. Its really bad that I’m bad with names though, and some people will recognize me from the Facebook group and call me by name, and I don’t know if I’m supposed to know them, or if they knew me from the Facebook group. But it definitely helps starting conversations and helps me met a lot of people because they will recognize me and come and introduce themselves to me which is really cool because I get to meet people who I may not run into otherwise and helps me so its helpful for getting to know a lot of people here.

Do you know other people who are considered Facebook Celebrities?

I generally don’t pay attention to who posts a lot, But I do know there are some people who are famous form some of their posts and I recognize people from their Facebook posts and know them because they said funny things on the post. It’s a very interesting system and knowing that you can get to know people before you meet them through Facebook can be pretty cool.

What an Interesting Network! So now, lets talk about the Facial Hair club. What made you think of this idea?

It really just came to me in a dream… I have a lot of spare time. My English teacher in high school was really big on beards and would have this thing where he wouldn’t shave from November to March and one day do a ridiculous thing with his mustache and call it mustache Monday and so I did that with him this year and it was something I really wanted to keep doing. And from that I just started thinking about beards more and this club basically came through all the ideas because I wanted to pursue something I loved.

What ideas do you have for this club?

Well none of the members so far are professional beard growers yet, and I want it to be a charity where we raise money for non profit organizations through our beards. There is a tradition known as no shave November when guys do it by the end of it your beard is so long that you have to trim it; so one thing I wanted to do was hold a station where you charge people to get their beards trimmed and donate the funds to charity. I was also hoping we could also hold a fashion show where people could model their beards or something of that sort. There are also $1 red sox tickets on Wednesday if you have a beard so that is something we’re going to do as often as we can as a bonding event.

So you’re going though the process of starting this club as a freshman – what can you say about how easy it is to accomplish this?

Well you obviously need support. We aren’t very big right now and I’ve seen a lot of the paperwork involved. It’s going to be a process but I hope more people will check it out soon and we will get more support with this article and stuff. You don’t need a beard to necessarily join the club- its just unique and fun and I think its something a lot people look for. It’s a little bit of work but if you’re passionate about what you want to do and you put in the time for it it’ll be worth it.

Do you encourage other people to start clubs of their own like this?

If there’s something you’re passionate about, go for it! Even if you’re not official there’s nothing stopping yourself from getting a group of friends together and doing what you love together and having fun with it.
