Gaga’s new song takes a very serious, emotional turn in comparison to her usual pop hits as she addresses the important topic of sexual assault on college campuses. The video follows the stories of several victims, all in different circumstances: two girls drugged at a party, one attacked by a colleague, and one out of the blue in a restroom, all of which are heart wrenching. The video ends with each woman finding peace with her friends and with a warning about the difficulty of dealing with assault.
Gaga and Diane Warren wrote the song for the new documentary The Hunting Ground, which exposes the issue of campus rape in the United States. The video helps show college-aged women that sexual assault could happen to a friend, a family member, or even ourselves at any time. Gaga sings, “’Til it happens to you, you don’t know how it feels.”
