The Best Study Apps for You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tufts chapter.

Between Snapchat, Instagram, and Words With Friends, you might think of your iPhone merely as a source of distraction from work during these next few stressful weeks. While we all know that whipping our your phone to play a “quick” game of Fruit Ninja can lead to a three-hour long effort to beat your high school, there are actually a number of ways in which you can use your phone as a study aid. We at Her Campus want all of you Collegiettes to ace all of your exams, so we urge you to check out these apps for some extra help during finals week. (You’ll love them so much that you’ll use them even after exams!)

Khan Academy: With over 3,500 videos focusing on a wide range of subjects, Khan Academy is an excellent resource for those looking for an alternative to traditional review methods. The videos are clear and concise, and many users have raved that they learned more from KA’s short presentations than they did from the full semester’s class lectures.

Awesome Note: Being the tech savvy Collegiettes you are, you may be familiar with the app Evernote. As great a resource as it is, however, Evernote’s new formatting has received many negative reviews. Whether you are a disillusioned Evernote user, or are exploring pro-exam apps for the first time, Awesome Note is a must-try. In addition to enabling you to attach photos, this app has a calendar that displays events, notes, and even to-do-lists. Those who are steadfast Evernote users need not fear – Awesome Note syncs easily with Evernote. This is a great app for the Collegiette who is looking to get organized!

WolframAlpha: This genius site can compute almost any math problem for you. An exclusive tip: instead of downloading the ‘lite’ app (half as functional) or buying the full one, just go to www.wolframalpha.com on your internet browser, and add the page to your home screen. You’ll get the full site for free!

Study Buddy: This app costs $0.99, but it’s well worth the pocket change. Open this app when you start your study session, and it will keep track of how much time you spend studying, and how much you spend procrastinating. If you open any other app on your phone while running Study Buddy, it will pause the study time, and instead keep track of how long you spend browsing the internet or playing Angry Birds. Study Buddy creates a “Graph of Study Efficiency” so you can see an objective representation of just how much time you spend studying vs. playing.

Bonus: Just like an actual in-person study buddy, this app provides you with encoring quotes throughout your study session.

FlashCards Plus Pro: This app offers huge database of already-made flashcards for studying, and allows the user to share these flashcards with friends. Users can also create personalized flashcards, and insert drawings, pictures, copied/pasted info. from the web onto them. (For those of you who use the app Quizlet, we suggest switching over to FlashCards Plus Pro! Its database is superior, its interface is more user-friendly, and you can even transfer your Quizlet flashcards onto this app)
