7 Tips To Avoid Overspending

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tufts chapter.

We are all too familiar with the feeling of guilt that comes with the “place order” click on Nasty Gal, peeking at the screen through the gaps between our fingers, unwilling to process the thought that again, we just spent this week’s whole budget! Why is it that we always seem to be buying stuff we don’t need on a whim? Here are some tips to avoid overspending and be a smart buyer!

1.     The Devil aka SALES. Shopping is not saving money. Period.

We all know the end-of-summer sales look sooo tempting! But the sad truth is, you’re still spending even when the item was on sale. The deals often trick us into thinking that we’re saving money by shopping (we wish!), and we end up buying things we don’t actually need. Which leads us to the next tip…

2.     Unsubscribe. Enough of the 143 mails

Cut yourself off from the links that lead you to the shopping sites. Get rid of the constant notifications of 70% off sales. You do not need that new liquid liner from Sephora.

3.     Do I really need this? Think before purchasing

Do you really need another pair of yoga pants from PINK just for the fourth tote bag you own from Victoria’s Secret? If you find yourself making up an occasion to wear those dangling earrings, chances are you don’t actually need them.

4.     It adds up. 10*10=100

Even when you’re shopping at H&M or Forever 21, multiple cheap items still add up quickly. It’s pretty simple—even for non-math majors! Please don’t put that crappy tank top in your cart just because it’s $5.

5.     Payday is not splurge day. Set your direct deposit to your savings account instead of your checking account.

I find leaving only a little amount of money in my checking account helps me save a lot of money and avoid overspending. It’s easy to get overexcited on paydays, but I promise saving is way more rewarding than spending in the end.

6.     One is good enough. Don’t buy something you already own

You don’t need another black beanie just for free shipping. Don’t buy something similar to what you have in your closet from another brand or pattern because that’s often how overspending happens!

7.     Be savvy. Know what to splurge on and what not to

Saving doesn’t mean not spending at all. It’s okay to splurge on the right items. Invest in essential pieces that can pull your whole outfit together and make you feel powerful in your clothes. Whether it’s a badass leather jacket, a pair of black stilettos, or a designer watch, know what to splurge on and what not to to avoid unnecessary purchases. Check out the 6 Items It’s Totally Okay to Splurge On.
