10 Movie-Themed Halloween Costumes (throughout the ages!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tufts chapter.

Finding the perfect Halloween costume is an essential aspect of the fall season. Whether you’re in it for the sole purpose of collecting the most candy, or for dressing up as someone other than yourself, Halloween is one of the best opportunities show your creative side (even if only for one night). However, dressing up comes with a great deal of thought, planning, and often stress. Why not make a costume from your favorite movie characters?  Here are some of the top costumes that are based off of famous movies to inspire your costumes for this Halloween:

1. Joel Goodsen, Risky Business – A big thanks to Tom Cruise for this classic costume. Even better, it takes minutes to pull together! All you need is a pair of tube socks, spandex, and a button-down t-shirt to bring back the old times of rock n’ roll.

2. Regina George, Mean Girls – If you’re feeling bold (and have an extra tank top you can spare) throw on a blonde wig and a black skirt to pull off this “fetch” costume. This costume can also work for a group, as long as you make sure to wear pink on Wednesdays.

3. Alex Owens, Flashdance – An easy throwback to the 80’s, dressing as this dancing queen is a perfect last-minute costume. Make sure to tag on leg warmers to the leotard, tights and off-the-shoulder sweatshirt for the full effect. A perm wouldn’t hurt either!

4. John Blutarsky, Animal House – The toga is one of the most basic, over worn costumes of all time, but Animal House brings Greek fashion to life. A bed sheet is the only ingredient (however, I’d recommend something underneath). The gown need not be white – patterned sheets are always a plus!

5. Daisy Duke, The Dukes of Hazzard – If you don’t already own some cowboy boots, here is a perfect excuse to get a pair. Wearing jean shorts and a cropped flannel will perfect this wild, wild west look.

6. The Pink Ladies, Grease – For another great group costume, models yourselves after The Pink Ladies. The signature part of the costume is obviously the jacket, but getting a group of your male friends to dress as The T-Birds is what makes this costume unique!

7. Elle Woods, Legally Blonde – Plain and simple: dress as a bunny. Unless you feel like spicing it up, keep your costume to all white clothing, a pink nose, and bunny ears. Only unlike Elle, we can promise that the Halloween parties will actually be costume-themed.

8. Thelma & Louise, Thelma & Louise – Do you and a best friend need a costume? Then Thelma and Louise are your girls! Throw on a pair of jeans, a muscle t and stick with your best friend all night to be sure no one will mistake you for these adventurous icons.

9. Daisy Buchanan, The Great Gatsby –Dressing up as Daisy from The Great Gatsby will provide for the perfect movie-inspired ensemble. A flashy, sparkly flapper dress and a pair of heels partnered with an elaborate headpiece will give you a classy 1920’s flare this Halloween.

10. Jake Blues & Elwood Blues, The Blues Brothers – A classic look as it, The Blues Brothers always rocked black suits with black sunglasses. This dynamic duo is an obvious cameo for the upcoming Halloween!
