The Must-Watch Shows of Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Trinity chapter.

These gloomy grey October days have us feeling like we just need to cuddle up on the couch and watch a good show. Luckily, our staff compiled our favorite shows of this season to give you plenty of options!

If you were a fan of 30 Rock or The Office, then you’ll love The Mindy Project. Mindy Kaling, who you may know better as The Office’s Kelly Kappor, plays a hilariously high maintenance doctor whose closest friends are her eccentric coworkers. With the awkward situations she gets herself into and her witty remarks, Mindy just about defines the word likeable. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, but mostly you’ll cringe with secondhand embarrassment. Watch The Mindy Project Tuesdays at 9:30 on Fox.

The fourth season of The Walking Dead premiered two weeks ago, and it didn’t take long for things to get messy (and, um, bloody). Usually by October you’d find me raving about the latest episodes of Homeland, but lately, Carrie’s tearful antics have me feeling like I’m watching a Real Housewives reunion. It’s that bad. Instead, I’ve turned my attention to The Walking Dead, in all its gory brilliance, and expect big things from new showrunner Scott Gimple. With several long-standing characters out of the picture (to put it mildly), this season should prove to be an exciting transition for the remaining cast. If you can stomach it, Seasons 1-3 are on Netflix, and Season 4 episodes air on Sundays at 9:00 on AMC.

It’s no secret that I love a good reality show, but this fall I have found a new love…The Voice (Mondays 8pm, Tuesdays 9pm, NBC). With awesome singing, a fresh concept of a competition show AND hot judges (cough Adam Levine, XTina and Blake Shelton) what more could you ask for!? Grab your roomies and give this new show a try!

Need a good scare? American Horror Story is the show for you. The title really says it all. This season takes place in New Orleans, and is about the secret history of witchcraft in America, and current day witches trying to protect their coven as they battle with Voodoo practitioners. Yes, this is a show about witches…but it’s a great one! Each season has a new theme and completely different story line, so go check out the first season about a haunted house, and the second season that takes place in a mental asylum. Be prepared to sleep with the lights on! Catch AHS Wednesdays at 10 on FX.

Need a break from studying for midterms? Tune in to Scandal every Thursday night and watch the famous Olivia Pope, the professional ‘fixer,’ make problems go away before anyone even knows they exist (if only she could do that to our term papers!). Filled with twists and turns, you never know what to expect next with this show! Be warned-highly addictive.

No shame about it, I’m a complete HBO addict. Train of thought: if the show is so good that HBO has decided to pick it up, then it’s most likely to woo me over. However, since all of the station’s shows have to go through some magical process of production before they can premiere each season, and since a lot of my shows are between seasons, I’m currently stuck with little to watch. However, since I like to think of Showtime as HBO’s slightly less cool sibling, I’m ever so grateful it runs one of my favorite shows, Homeland, in the off season of my other favorites. Homeland returned to the network only a few weeks ago for its 3rd season, and I’m seriously having trouble trying to convey to you all how great it truly is. It follows the lives and entanglements of Carrie Mathison, who works for the CIA and heavily struggles with bipolar disorder, and Nicholas Brody, a former Marine Corps Scout Sniper who may or may not have been “turned” during his time as a POW of al-Qaeda leader Abu Nazir in Iraq. The show has won 6 Emmys and 2 Golden Globes so if you haven’t been convinced by me, hopefully professional hollywood critics’ affirmation has done the job. Watch the show– witness Carrie’s crazy and brilliance, learn a little about the CIA, become a little patriotically paranoid, and even chuckle a bit at Brody’s angsty teenage daughter, Dana.

Do you love the money, the clothing and the pretty faces of Gossip Girl? Do you love the thrill of never knowing what will happen next in any of those crime shows (SVU, Criminal Minds, The Mentalist, etc.)? If so, tune in to ABC TV for Season 3 of Revenge. Emily is back in the Hamptons, in the classiest Alexander McQueen sheath dress, with a new plan to take down the Grayson family. With Emily’s recent engagement to the Grayson’s son, getting revenge against the family who did her father wrong will be sweeter than ever. On Sundays at 9pm!
