Must See Local Fall Concerts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Towson chapter.

One of the best things about Towson is the music scene. There are tons of venues in Baltimore and the surrounding areas. A lot of good fall concerts coming up have already sold out, but here are my recommendations of who to go out and see this fall!

Florence + The Machine opening for U2 at Ravens Stadium

Who: Florence + The Machine with openers The Weekend and The Maccabees
Where: Merriweather Post Pavillion
When: September 19
Price: $40-$55
Why: No one can deny how majestic and powerful the voice of lead singer Florence Welch is. The latest album, Ceremonials, proves that this band music can be beautiful, powerful, and inspiring all at the same time. I saw Florence + The Machine last summer. Even though they were opening, they had audience members up swaying and singing along. I can just imagine the crowd dancing around the lawn with the cool night and bright lights filling the atmosphere at Merriweather.

Me and other fellow Her Campus Towson friends: Ali Pannoni and Caitlin Long at Free Fest 2011

Who: Virgin Mobile Free Fest with Jack White, Skrillex, M83, Nas, ZZ Top, Santigold, Alabama Shakes, Ben Folds Five, The Dismemberment Plan, and many more!!!
Where: Merriweather Post Pavillion
When: October 6
Price: Free tickets are already “freed” out, but if you can still purchase some tickets for $50
Why: To be honest, I am not familiar with most of the artists playing. However, Free Fest is always a good time no matter what! I have gone the last four or five years and was never disappointed. Plus how can you beat FREE? If you are lucky enough to score a ticket, go for it!

Who: Bloc Party with opener Ceremony
Where: 9:30 club
When: September 17
Price: $35
Why: I have been into Bloc Party since high school! Their music is unique and catchy. I recommend the album Silent Alarm to everyone. It was even named ‘Indie Album of the Year” in 2006. I have no doubt these English guys will rock their way to your heart!

Matt and Kim last summer in Baltimore!

Who: Matt and Kim
Where: 9:30 club
When: October 10
Price: $25
Why: I have seen Matt and Kim quite a few times, and it is always a blast! One time my friend even lost her shoes! It is guaranteed that everyone in the audience will be dancing and singing and going insane. Not to mention that Matt and Kim are so lovable. The two have been dating for a long time, and they are adorable, funny, and talented. If you are already a fan and cannot catch the concert, check out their new album Lightning which will be out soon.

Who: Motion City Soundtrack with openers Jukebox the Ghost and Now, Now
Where: 9:30 club
When: November 8
Price: $22 (good bargain!!)
Why: Ever since middle school, I have been in love with the first MCS album Commit this to Memory. Even though in my opinion their follow up albums have not been as good, opener JukeBox the Ghost is sure to make up for it. I saw them open for Jack’s Mannequin last winter, and the first thing I did when I got back home at 2 a.m. was buy their album.

Who: Regina Spektor with opener Only Son
Where: The Lyric Opera House
When: October 2
Price: $45
Why: I have never seen her live before, but I am pretty sure that if I did I would cry because her music is so beautiful. She will make you cry, laugh, sing along, and wish you could play piano like she does.

Two Door Cinema Club playing at Free Fest

Who: Two Door Cinema Club
Where: 9:30 club
When: October 3
Price: $28
Why: Two years ago I went to see Tokyo Police Club and came out a Two Door Cinema Club fan. They totally killed it! Dancing, singing, incredible light show, everything! My only regret was watching from the balcony instead of being front stage where the crowd was going insane!

Who: Freelance Whales
Where: 9:30 club
When: October 31 (Halloween!)
Price: $18.50 (what a steal!)
Why: I love listening to this band when I’m studying, traveling, or feeling down. They are calming, cute, and have a bit of folk in them. This might not be a jump around and go crazy show, but with their talent and this price, it is a must see!

Author’s note: Sorry I did not list anything from Ram’s Head Live. I really wanted to since it is so close to Towson, but there was absolutely nothing I could recommend at this time! If you are willing to make the drive to DC, the 9:30 club is the best venue I have ever been to!
