Ninety years after women were granted the right to vote and publicly burned their bras during the women’s movement of the 1960s, women are still paid less than men and in general receive less respect than their male counterparts. Even worse, if a women flaunts her femininity and glamourous persona than she is subject to even harsher treatment and unfair labels such as a “bimbo” and “stupid.”

In a world with powerful female role models like Hillary Clinton and Oprah, many societies’ perception of the “girly” successful woman is laden with unfair stereotypes. At Her Campus Towson, we believe that you don’t have to ditch your pink Sperrys for loafers and your eyelet spring dresses for brown turtlenecks to be taken seriously in the lecture hall, study group, and eventually the office. Here’s our go-to-guide to gaining respect and admiration regardless of your personal style.

 Have a Positive Attitude

No one wants to put up with a negative Nancy. If you have a good work ethic and a positive attitude people will gravitate towards you and soon they will be asking you questions on an assignment. Sometimes people may talk about you for your outlandish style or personality-they are just jealous. Keep your head up and ignore them. Others will respect you for your maturity and grace.

Always Do Your Best

Just because you don’t have the IQ of Albert Einstein doesn’t mean you can not succeed. Do your personal best and you will see results. It doesn’t take a genius to become the top of your class or to become the head of fortune 500 company. Ambition and hard work combined with opportunity are the key to success. You can do anything you put your mind too. If you work hard, people will notice and you will reap the rewards.

Don’t Worry About Your Competition

The only person you can control in life is yourself, so there is no use in worrying about your competition. If you do your best than you will always succeed. There is no use worrying about other people’s grades or promotions. Take ownership of your life and work hard. You are in control of your destiny.

Be Confident

Walk into a room with your head held high and show off your intelligence. It won’t matter what you look like. You are a smart, beautiful, and stylish collegiette™. Intelligent, ambitious people like yourself will notice and they are the people you need to worry about. The connections you make with the people that respect you will carry you through life.

Elle Woods was right, “You must always have faith in yourself.” Show off your brain and your style! Have confidence and grace and success will come your way. Then savvy sophisticated women like ourselves will be able to take over the world and prove those arrogant egoistic men wrong!
