Is ‘Lisa Frankenstein’ Worth Watching?

Lisa Frankenstein was released on Feb. 9, 2024 and seemed to be the perfect movie to watch for Valentine’s Day, especially if you are part of the lonely hearts club. After watching the screening of this new Focus Features film, I had many thoughts.

Overall, the movie is really funny. I found myself laughing more than I expected to. However, the plot itself was a bit out of the ordinary compared to the types of movies I enjoy watching. The beginning of the film starts off great: a “weird” girl who went through trauma, crushing on the cool, artistic boy. Additionally, she has a strange sort of relationship with the statue of a man who died at the grave near her house.

Things started getting weird when the corpse came to real life and, as a pair, both characters began killing those who wronged them. I didn’t expect the killing to be such a repetitive theme in the film.

As previously mentioned, the script of the movie was well done because it was the perfect mix of comedy but also used slang that is relatable to the current young generation. By the end of the movie, the “weird” girl and the real-life statue end up in a relationship. The ending was strange, but I will leave you to find out for yourself.

All in all, the film was very well done in terms of dialogue, costumes, and effects. The plot itself was a little bit out of my comfort zone, making me feel a bit uncomfortable at times.

Former Riverdale actor Cole Sprouse was one of two leads of the movie. Starring as Jughead Jones from 2017-2023, he took on the role of the Frankenstein monster in the film. Although he said a total of 10 words in the whole film, given he was a corpse who came back to life, his acting was good.

The visual effects they put on Sprouse’s character, including hair and costume, really gave the resemblance it needed to give. For a character that had very little dialogue, he was definitely the funniest character in the film, next to Lisa Swallows, of course.

Another film star, Charles Melton, who played Reggie Mantle in Riverdale from 2017-2023 as well, moved on to play Joe Yoo in May December, a drama Oscar-nominated film directed by Todd Haynes. The movie surrounds an actress named Elizabeth, who takes on the role of a woman who sexually assaulted a 13-year-old, which eventually led to a marriage. Melton, who plays the 13-year-old’s older self, has been recognized for his incredible supporting role in the film.

Former Riverdale actors Cole Sprouse and Charles Melton have moved on to bigger roles in the film industry that have had fair good reviews. Having watched both, Lisa Frankenstein and May December, I am sure these actors will keep on succeeding in their acting career.
