“It’s time” (cue Mariah Carey’s All I want for Christmas is you)! As we wrap up the year, it’s time for my favourite holiday— Christmas! The great thing about Toronto is how the whole city jumps into the holiday mood instantly. Whether you’re looking for a decked-out Christmas experience, a sophisticated winter chalet or a tropical escape from the snow, the city’s bar scene has transformed into a winter wonderland.
Being in a big city like Toronto is truly spectacular! Transforming the cityscape from something chilly, grey and gloomy into a glittering, high-energy festive hub. From the dazzling light displays that illuminate Nathan Phillips Square and the iconic, cobblestone streets of the Distillery Winter Village, to the countless festive events, and the tree lighting at the Eaton Centre, the spirit of the season is palpable everywhere you go.
However, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of Christmas lovers to see a big tree isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, or their ideal intimate holiday experience that one is craving. That’s where the fun of Christmas-themed pop-up bars comes in, offering a warm, spirited, and perfectly curated escape from the winter chill.
These pop-ups have become an annual staple, bringing Torontonians back year after year for good reasons! They are essentially a dose of nostalgia and holiday cheer, tapping into the collective desire to revert to the joy of childhood Christmases. The décor is often over-the-top, from tinsel to Santas, reindeer, elves, and thousands of twinkling lights, a beautiful, intentional contrast to the minimalist aesthetics that dominate the rest of the year. This sheer volume of festive flair is infectious; it’s almost impossible not to smile and feel a little giddy when sipping an Eggnog cocktail surrounded by an explosion of red and green.
More than just a pretty backdrop for your next Instagram photo (even though a lot of us go for the pictures too), these temporary, highly themed bars offer a unique social experience. They capture the magic of the season in a way that your regular neighbourhood pub simply can’t.
You’re not just grabbing a drink; you’re stepping into a completely immersive environment. Whether it’s a tiki-inspired tropical Christmas that tricks your brain into forgetting the sub-zero temperatures outside, or a sophisticated Scandinavian chalet that offers a chic retreat, each pop-up provides a distinct holiday fantasy. This limited-time nature creates a sense of urgency and fun, making them the perfect spot for holiday parties, friend meetups, or a festive date night.
As the days get shorter and the Toronto winter settles in, these glowing, spirited havens are exactly what we need to keep the seasonal energy high, offering a perfect blend of high-quality, creative cocktails and pure, unadulterated holiday fun.
Grab your ugly sweaters and get your cameras ready. Here are seven Christmas bars in Toronto that you don’t wanna miss this season!
- Miracle Toronto
-
Locations: 875 Bloor St W & 235 Queens Quay W
Miracle Toronto has not one but two locations! Having a second location that opened by Harbourfront, which builds on the reputation of the original Christmas bar, but is open to all ages! You will be fully immersed in the Christmas experience. The most popular drink is the Christmopolitan, a festive twist on the classic that incorporates spiced cranberry sauce, elderflower liqueur, and a subtle absinthe mist rinse.
Note: the Bloor Street location is only 19+, and to get in, you must pay $14.50 per person for a reservation. This does come with a souvenir toque; however, this doesn’t apply to walk-ins, as they mainly rely on walk-ins due to limited reservations.
Fun fact: for every cocktail you purchase, a dollar gets donated to Nellie’s, a women’s and children’s shelter - Papi Chulos
-
Location: 121 Ossington Ave
This is the place to go if you want a fiesta rather than a silent night. At Papi Chulos, you are fully immersed in a tropical holiday party with neon lights and high energy. You will have a great time if you prefer loud music over carols. The most popular drink is their festive Margarita.
Note that this is a sit-down restaurant, but the vibe is definitely a party. Reservations are highly recommended because the Ossington strip gets packed, and there is usually a strict dining time limit during the holidays.
Fun fact: They serve a massive “Margarita Pitcher” that is perfect for sharing if you are with a big group of friends. - Frosty’s Fiesta at Papi & Rosita
-
Location: 198 Ossington Ave
If the line at Papi Chulo’s is too long, just walk a few blocks to their sister spot for the “Frosty’s Fiesta” pop-up. You will be fully immersed in a Mexican holiday celebration that feels a bit more food-focused than the party down the street. You are bound to have a great time fighting over who gets the last Birria taco while sipping on a “Drunk Elf” cocktail, which includes apple agave, lime, tequila and triple sec.
Fun Fact: This is their first annual Christmas pop-up, so it’s the perfect spot to try if you want to beat the crowds that flock to the older, more famous bars. - Naughty Nutcracker at Little Ese
-
Location: 875 Queen St W
Located right across from Trinity Bellwoods Park is Naughty Nutcracker at Little Ese. You will be fully immersed in a cheeky, high-energy vibe with their “Naughty Nutcracker” theme. They serve “guilty pleasure” food like Al Pastor pizza and wings alongside Santa or Reindeer Margaritas.
Note: The maximum party size is 6 people, and there is absolutely no grace period for late arrivals. If you aren’t there on time, you lose your table!
Fun fact: They are famous for their “Margarita Towers,” so if you really want to get the party started, skip the individual glasses and order the tower for the table.
- Java Jingle at Little Sister
-
Locations: 102 Portland St & 2031 Yonge St
If you want to escape the snow, head to Little Sister for a tropical holiday. They have transformed both their Portland and Yonge Street locations into “Java Jingle,” a tiki-inspired holiday paradise that combines their Dutch-Indonesian food with neon lights and vibrant ornaments. Like Miracle, this is a sit-down dining experience, so you can actually hear your friends talk.
Note: Reservations are highly recommended as both locations fill up fast for dinner service.
Fun Fact: At Little Sister, the two-level Portland space transforms into a sleeker winter wonderland, with tropical accents that let guests escape the cold temporarily.
- Nordic by BarChef at The Well
-
Location: 486 Front St W (The Well)
This modern Winter Wonderland is great if you find traditional Christmas decor a bit too “busy.” Located at The Well, this Nordic by the team behind BarChef offers a sleek, Scandinavian-inspired winter escape. Think fur blankets, fire pits and a cozy atmosphere. This is an outdoor/indoor hybrid space, so dress warmly!
Fun Fact: This Bar offers a unique experience in a cozy yurt! - Project Gigglewater
-
Location: 1369 Dundas St W
The neighbourhood gem located on Dundas West, Project Gigglewater, offers a “Giggly Christmas” takeover that feels intimate and charming. It avoids the massive, chaotic lineups of the bigger pop-ups but delivers some of the best-balanced cocktails in the city.
Note: There is a 20% auto gratuity for groups of 6 or more, and all seating is limited to an hour and fifteen minutes from the time of reservation
Fun Fact: The name “Gigglewater” is a fun historical fact in itself—it’s a popular Prohibition-era term for alcohol (booze), in which the owner was inspired by!
Honourable mention:
- Jack Astors
-
Location: multiple locations across the GTA
A lot of people come to Jack Astors for cheaper eats and a fun night out! With Christmas decor and holiday-inspired menu items, this is a great place to go if you don’t want to wait in line for the Christmas bars or don’t have reservations, and still have that Christmas feel. Until January 4th, a portion of the proceeds goes to the Make-A-Wish Foundation!
Even though finals season is approaching, save this list so you can look forward to a celebratory night out during the cold, festive season!
