5 Wardrobe Essentials to Survive February on Campus

  1. Blanket ScarvesBy the time February rolls around, none of us want to get out of bed and face Toronto’s brutal winter temperature. Blanket scarves serve double duty, being both functional and cute. They’re a socially acceptable way of bringing your bed with you to class and can be seen all over the city this winter. You can find them all over the city at stores, such as Urban Outfitters, Zara, Aritzia and, if you’re lucky enough, your neighborhood thrift store! As an added bonus you can use it one as a blanket for lectures in the AMC theatres – as long as you don’t drift off!
  2. Waterproof BootsAnybody who has survived a Toronto winter knows these are a definite must-have for the slushy, often salty sidewalks. There’s nothing more uncomfortable than walking around with wet socks all day… except possibly running into your ex on laundry day, of course. Comfy as UGGs are, they should be relegated to slipper duty by now because they’re far from waterproof. For true Canadiana chic, splurge on a pair of Sorels! They’ll pay for themselves and are virtually indestructible.
  1. A Warm Winter ParkaBefore moving to Toronto, I made sure to invest in a warm winter coat. Gone are the days when running outside in a thin jacket before sliding into the warmth of a waiting car. Whether walking from your res room to Ted Rogers or commuting on the subway from Markham, a leather jacket doesn’t quite cut it anymore. The options and styles are endless, from the ubiquitous Canada Goose parkas to vintage furs. You’re sure to find a coat that’s both cozy and cute!
  1. Turtleneck sweatersI hated turtlenecks for the longest time after being repeatedly forced to wear them as a child. But as a collegiette, even I have to admit there is nothing more chic than a chunky knit turtleneck sweater. These sweaters are incredibly practical, and the high neck means you don’t have to spend valuable sleeping time hunting for the perfect scarf to both go with your outfit and keep your neck a frostbite-free zone! Worried about your look being too school-marmish and not chic enough? Spice it up with bold accessories or funky leggings!
  1. Touch Screen MittensWith these gems, the all-too-familiar “I’m going out, I’ll text you later!” text that dead-ends conversations has been banished to the history books. It’s worth hunting down a pair of these just so you can text with warm hands because the payoff is no longer having to choose between texting that Tinder-cutie back or keeping your fingers safe from the elements.
