10 Schoolbag Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Toronto MU chapter.

A cute totebag

Obviously, the first thing you need is a super cute bag to tote everything around in! We’ve got two of these fabulous Vera Bradley bags to give away to make sure you’re reaching your maximum level of cuteness this spring! Read through to the end of this article for contest details!

An emergency stash of feminine products!

You never know when your period is going to decide to invite itself into your life again-but it’s never going to be at a convenient time! Stash away your tampons, pads, or diva cups so you’re always prepared-you don’t want to ruin your cute underwear! (Our own writer Noella wrote a great piece last semester about the pros and cons of such things!)

Sunscreen!

Yes, the weather this winter has been indecisive and tempermental, but sunscreen is a must-at the very least, moisturizer with SPF in it should always be in your bag. You’ll thank us when you’re 40 and mistaken for 25.

Chargers.

Don’t be THAT person posting up in the Accepted at Ryerson group “looking for a 60W Magsafe Macbook charger in the SLC URGENT”. Shove your phone and computer chargers in your bag so you’re always prepared-like the goat in the unappreciated classic film Hoodwinked.

Eyeliner.

Even if you’re a fan of the bare face, nothing beats the look of a swipe of eyeliner. It looks chic and polished, and even if you feel dead inside, you’ll look like you care about the links between Jane Eyre and theories of colonization at 8 in the morning. Lucky for you, we’ve got some great Milani eyeliners to give away, too! Stick around!

Deodorant.

Sweat happens. Don’t let it defeat you. Carry a travel sized stick of deodorant with you and you’ll never have to worry about being that terrible human being on the TTC who doesn’t seem to know how to shower.

A travel mug.

I’m not here to judge you for what you put in it (although maybe vodka at 8am isn’t the wisest life choice), but a travel mug is a must-have! Invest in a good one (this author is a fan of Contigo mugs) and you can bring coffee from home and have it stay warm your whole commute! You’ll save a bundle on starbucks…or slightly less on Tim Hortons, and it can double as a water bottle once you rinse it out so you’ll be hydrated! Two birds with one stone!

A notebook!

Jot down your thoughts on just about anything, doodle endlessly through class, pass notes with your bestie….actually write notes on what your prof is talking about-I’m not here to tell you how to live your life. But toss one of these in your bags. Bonus: You can scrawl down your number and tear it out for the hottie you just heard talking about his breakup from four rows away. Flawless.

Headphones.

Because while you know that Trevor from Oakville’s latest mixtape is fire, everyone around you is wishing you would catch on fire. Luckily, we also have tons of headphones to give away!

A scarf.

When the weather’s as…exciting as it’s been lately, a scarf is a must-have. It instantly adds a dose of chic to any outfit, and transitions your “it’s so warm out! Omg!” look to “is it seriously freezing rain right now” in about ten seconds. Oh, and you can bunch them up into a makeshift pillow when that one kid in the front row keeps going on and on about the true meaning of the Hobbit’s relationship with the dwarves.

Oh…and I suppose you could bring the books you need for class, too.

So now that you know what we keep in our bags-here’s your opportunity to let us know what your essentials are! Follow us on twitter and/or Instagram (@HCRyerson) and tell us two things you always carry with you! The best two winners submissions by March 14th will each win a Vera Bradley tote bag stuffed with a black Milani eyeliner, headphones, and lots of other goodies! Good luck, and we can’t wait to hear what’s in your bags!
