Pamela Anderson: Women and The Media in the 90’s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

Pamela Anderson recently came out with a documentary on Netflix titled Pamela, a love story in response to Hulu’s release of the series Pam and Tommy. Pamela’s documentary was vulnerable, candid, and empowering. Pamela created her own narrative of the image that the media created for her after the release of the tape of her and Tommy Lee in 1995. Headlines coined terms like “Pamela Anderson Lee Hottest Internet Property” and “Celebrities Will Remain Naked on The Net”, along with other vulgar things. Pamela became the punchline of the media. During talk shows the hosts would make jokes such as “I have it on DVD”, and Pamela handled comments like these with such grace which attests a lot to her character. Pamela talks about how although she did shoots with playboy and worked on Baywatch, this was taken without her consent and published for virtually the entire world to see and comment on. Sadly, this was not the last of the media making headlines berating women and this was really just the precedent for what would come for famous women from the 90s on.
