Dancers Shape: Pros and cons of having friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

This is a sponsored post as part of the “Fit for Summer” Challenge, presented by Dancers Shape and Her Campus Texas.

From day one, my favorite thing about Dancers Shape has been the community. I love that it’s a place where the instructors take the time to get to know me and everyone else in class. I see working women and other UT students juggling busy schedules and coming to classes and it all reminds me that yes, I can do this, and yes, it’s supposed to be fun!

All sappiness aside, the classes are still difficult. I’m basically in a perpetual state of soreness in some muscle or another. I reach a point during each class, usually about halfway through, where my body is telling my brain, “I never want to do this again.” As my leg quivers and my hamstring burns, I’m tempted to listen. But then I look around the room and see about a dozen women with the same look on their faces, silently saying, “This is kicking my butt, but it’s going to be worth it.”

I don’t know if there’s something wrong with the way I’m wired, but I’m pretty sure I get more of those exercise endorphins everyone talks about from being around people than I do from sweating for an hour. So taking classes with fellow Longhorns Naomi and Selen, pictured above with our awesome instructor Jennifer, not only gives me that extra push to actually go to class (just another advantage of carpooling – no backing out!) but it also makes them a lot more fun.

Friends are great. So what are the cons, you ask? Considering I’m trying to whip my diet into shape along this whole journey too, friends are sometimes my downfall. Don’t get me wrong, the benefits far outweigh the costs. However, I’m pretty sure that if I were a recluse it would be easier to stay in my room and munch on carrots all day. Instead, I occasionally have to go out and be social (horrific, I know!) and face the world’s temptations. I mean, what trip to South Congress is complete without a cupcake stop? Besides, I burned it off in class… right?
