The Bigger the State the Bigger the… BBQ?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

Admittedly, I am reviving an odd, Texas news story that received insufficient media attention (in my opinion) at its peak in 2015. Nonetheless, this story includes information that you need to know if you are a Texan, a barbecue lover, or, quite frankly, someone easily fascinated by oddities. I stumbled upon the story this week and thought it might prove light-hearted, pleasant reading for y’all heading into Friday.

In 2015, a Texas family went semi-viral on news channels across the country, but probably not for any of the reasons you would first suspect. The Folsom family rose to temporary fame as a result of their extraordinarily large BBQ pit (the self-proclaimed “world’s largest barbecue pit”), a contraption that weighs 40 tons, can cook four tons of meat in a single batch, and even includes a full bar. If you’re still not fully convinced that this pit is a masterpiece, consider this fact: the truck can produce enough meat in one batch to feed over 17,000 people!

While I have been unable to find out where the massive pit is stationed today, be attentive if you end up driving through Brennan, Texas. It very well might still be proudly stationed in the Folsom’s front yard awaiting its next massive catering job!

While this barbecue pit is not currently the largest in the world, you can’t deny that is truly a sight to see and that you feel a bit more proud of being a Texan after hearing this brief tale of Texas-size food preparation.
