The Best True Crime Podcasts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

I love true crime. A lot of people seem embarrassed to admit this, maybe because it makes them look weird for enjoying learning about murder, but I’m not afraid to say it. Since I was little I have loved watching shows like Forensic Files, and other crime related shows. I recently discovered true crime podcasts. Podcasts are great to listen to while riding the bus, driving long distances, or even working out. They are also highly accessible. If you have an iPhone you can access them through the Podcasts app, or anyone can access them on Spotify. Also there are websites that produce podcasts that you can listen on like Feral Audio, Midroll Media, and Earwolf Network. Here are some of my favorite true crime podcasts.

  1. My Favorite Murder

I have been listening to this podcast for awhile now. It’s hosted by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark and is under the comedy category. These are two very funny women with a passion for true crime. Every week they post a new episode or minisode. In the regular episodes they each tell the story of a murder, and in the minisode they read hometown murders that listeners have sent in. These women are hilarious and discuss murder in a respectful way. They also address important mental health issues.

2. The Stranglers

This podcast is told in more of a storytelling way. It is about the unsolved murders of 13 women in Boston in the early 60s. This murderer has become known as the Boston Strangler. This podcast is an investigation into the murders and has 12 episodes. This is no longer an on-going podcast, but the investigation element makes it a very interesting show.

3. True Crime Garage

True Crime Garage is another comedy podcast, hosted by men. This is very similar to My Favorite Murder and the two often overlap. Based on which hosts you like better you might find a favorite and stick to it. Or you can just listen to both and get the ultimate true crime fix.

4. The Vanished

This podcast can get a little spooky and sad at times. It centers on real stories of people who have gone missing and have not been found. Several episodes focus of children who have gone missing, so if you are sensitive to stuff like that, you may want to skip those episodes. The episodes go very in depth into the investigations and include 911 calls and news stories on the cases. This is a good podcast for those who do not enjoy murder necessarily, but still enjoy true crime.

5. Serial

Serial is a very popular podcast. It is run like a TV show and has 2 seasons. This one is similar to The Stranglers because it is an investigative journalism style podcast. Each season is about one murder case that is not yet solved. The first season is about the murder of Hae Min Lee in 1993. Hae Min Lee’s boyfriend was eventually convicted of her murder, but because of the popularity of the podcast, he has received the chance for a new trial after it was found that he was given ineffective counsel by his lawyers.
