How to Deal: Finding a cute costume on a college budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tennessee chapter.

So once again I am talking about being a broke college student, probably because I am one….

Most girls want to strut their stuff with a cute looking costume for Halloween. However, when the time comes to buy a costume, everything seems ridiculously expensive. Many costumes range from 40-80 dollars, and don’t have much more coverage than a swimsuit. Well I’m going to tell you about an easy way to find a cheap costume that can still be cute enough to walk the streets of Knoxville in.

1.     Look through your closet– often times you will be able to find clothes that you already own that can be used for your costume. For example, I am being a sailor, so I found a navy blue wife beater and a pair of blue and white striped shorts for my costume. This is your best option because it is free and you already know that it fits you.

2.     Look through your roommate’s closet– if you can’t find any outfits in your closet, ask your roommates. Chances are they have more clothes options for you as well as some old Halloween outfits that they aren’t wearing. Who knows, maybe they will have a killer lady cop outfit sitting around collecting dust.

3.     Go to the fabric store– fabric is not very expensive, so if you know how to sew this can be a great option for you. Check out Walmart, Hobby Lobby, or Hancock Fabrics: they tend to have a wide variety of options. Additionally, many of them have Halloween look books that can give you ideas and tell you how much fabric you need for your costume. Fellow “How to Deal” blogger Rachel is making her maid costume by sewing it together with fabrics she got from the fabric store.

4.     Go to goodwill– This is a great option for anyone on a college budget. The goodwill on 17th street has a wide variety of clothes and costume jewelry that is very inexpensive. You are bound to find something that suits you there.

So, really, finding a costume on a college budget is not that hard. You can still look hot for cheap. In my opinion, the best costumes come from people who are creative enough to make their own. So get out there girls and have a great Halloween weekend!
