Why I Love Baby Goats and Swans

Viviana Levin Student Contributor, Temple University
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

It all started when I went to Hawaii in 2024. On my trip I visited a farm and met Beep Beep, a baby goat. Beep Beep jumped up and down, which was so cute and she looked very happy.

This brought my love for baby goats into my life. Some may say it’s childish or cringey, but I think finding comfort and joy in small things is the way to build a happy life for yourself.

Maybe the big moments in life aren’t what makes life so great, but the small comforts, memories, or joys are what builds a life worth waking up to every morning. Not every moment can be filled with a lot of laughter or big events in your life. The small moments matter, too.

Whenever I see a baby goat or get to hold one, it automatically brings me happiness. In a way I wish I was as happy, innocent, carefree, and guileless as a baby goat. It also reminds me of a smaller version of myself that I hope to still carry with me for the rest of my life.

Maybe smaller things like your favorite animal are there to remind us of who we are as a person, and small reminders like this can help us in times of need. This is why I think it’s important to also find gratitude in smaller and seemingly insignificant moments.

Another example of this could be if you have a specific love for the smell of rain or freshly mowed grass. Maybe you love the tune of one song or eating fresh fruit. I think it’s important to slow down, recognize, and appreciate these things.

As much as I do love baby goats, I also have a love for swans. This is because of their beauty and grace, something I hope to also see reflected in my own self/life.

I think it’s so beautiful how swans mate for life and how they represent, according to Swan Symbolism: What is the Spiritual Meaning of a Swan, “the journey of the soul, moving from one stage of life to another with grace. Their ability to switch effortlessly between water, land, and air is seen as a metaphor for adaptability and spiritual growth.”

I think finding things that bring happiness or symbolism into your life helps you to resonate with them more often and with every reminder. I also think an interesting perspective could be to look at life and yourself as a cup to be filled.

Maybe it would be beneficial to have the small moments fill your cup and the big moments be the overflow. It can become routine to go to classes during the week and wait for the excitement of the weekend, but that’s five whole days of anticipation for another moment in time.

It’s important to have this excitement and it’s okay to be anticipating something you are looking forward to, but I also think it’s just as important to be present in the moment and appreciate the things/life around you right now.

So maybe over the next week, take slow moments to look around yourself and consider the smaller things that make your life better. And when doing this maybe you’ll realize everything that makes you happy is already in your everyday life as it contributes to your cup filling up!
