What I Would Do if I Won the Lottery

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

A few weeks ago, everywhere I went people were discussing the lottery jackpot, the one worth $1.5 billion.

Since everyone I knew was talking about what they would do if they won, it made me think of what I’d do if I had that type of cash:

1. Pay off my school debt

Uh, hello. Of course this would be #1 as a college student. Now, not everyone is in school, but for those who are, they probably have a pretty big amount of money to pay back from student debt. The lottery winnings could help free students from the weight of their loans.

2. Buy a car

Is it just me, or are you SO sick of traveling on public transportation? Don’t get me wrong, the experience of navigating through a city is an invaluable one, but a car would be a nice luxury, especially when public transportation takes too long and is almost always packed.

3. Give my parents money

They’re the ones who’ve helped me so much throughout my life and I’m sure many of you could relate with your own parents. It wouldn’t be fair to win the lottery without paying them back.

4. Did I hear shopping spree?

It feels like I’ve been recycling the same outfits for too long. I would go straight to the mall and shower myself with clothes and shoes – Carrie Bradshaw style. I would take a trip to Victoria’s Secret and rack up on some PINK because it’s been way too long.

5. Give back

I would put some money into the community because I’ve always had a dream of starting a non-profit organization. The only issue I ever had with starting it is the funding. With the lottery’s help, I can make this dream finally come true.

6. Travel

All my life I’ve wanted to travel and see the world and winning the lottery would finally let me do just that. I want to hike to a mountain top and experience different cultures, food and people. Since I’ll have extra money to use, I could experience all the crazy things that I probably once thought of but never thought I would actually do, like skydiving.

 7. Buy a house

In my early twenties, thinking of owning an actual house and not a tiny apartment is a huge fantasy. With the lottery, settling down somewhere, maybe in the West Coast in an actual home of my own would then become a reality.

8. Make it rain

I’m just saying, who WOULDN’T want to get a bunch of cash together and throw it all up in the air 90s music video style just ONCE? Anyone?

9. Save

The last thing I would do is save. Yes, I know what you’re thinking. I talked a lot about spending, but I would put some away for safekeeping, as everyone should. You never know what may happen or come up, so it’s always good to have some emergency funds, ladies.

Hopefully, one day, I’ll be lucky enough to hit the lottery jackpot. Until then, I’ll be hitting the books and making cheap coffee at home to save up.
