Sometimes referred to as the third eye for its spiritual correlations and light-sensitive abilities, our pineal glands play a major role in several bodily functions. The pineal gland isn’t fully understood, like much of our brain, but a couple of things we do know is that it plays a role in our sleep patterns, decision making, how we perceive our realities, and especially female hormones.
Our pineal gland produces and regulates a handful of hormones and is located in somewhat the center of our brains. Out of the eight hormones the third eye regulates, melatonin seems to be the most researched. Hence why it plays a large role in our sleep/circadian rhythms. Its ability to communicate the sensation of lightness, or darkness to our brains has led to some conclusions within its secreted hormones (melatonin).
When we see light there is an activation within nerve cells that communicate to our pineal gland that it should not produce melatonin. This is why we should avoid keeping lights on or looking at our electronics if we anticipate sleeping within that certain time period. Some have further concluded that the light our cellphones admit, (electromagnetic fields) disrupt our melatonin production. A stone called shungite, made out of carbon, can possibly shield these fields emitted from our technology. Some even believe this stone can purify water. This is because one commonly known mineral that negatively affects the third eye is fluoride. Fluoride is used to reduce cavities and tooth decay. Exposure to fluoride leads to calcification. Calcification of the pineal gland needs more research in order to have a backbone, but something that is present in almost all water and toothpaste should be a concern. Calcification is the process of calcium salts accumulating, which usually occurs in the formation of bone.
Pineal gland health should be a priority for women considering the correlation between melatonin and female hormones. When the pineal gland is unbalanced, our melatonin levels are just as imbalanced, which interacts directly with our hormones. This can lead to irregular menstrual cycles and even affect fertility. Many suggest keeping a sleep journal and mindful activities like yoga or meditation to regulate our third eye health.
All in all, it comes down to our production of melatonin. So next time you’re getting ready for bed, grab a book instead of your phone and set some ambient lighting, letting your mind know it’s time to release the sleep hormone.
The major correlations to our third eye derive from religion. The third eye is believed to aid one seeking enlightenment or spiritual awakening, this is why most of the advice for maintaining pineal gland health relies on mindfulness.
Next time you are feeling hazy, had a wild period cycle, or have had foggy decision making it might be time to regulate your pineal gland through meditation, fluoride free water and toothpaste, and intentional use of light.
