Met Gala 2021. Let’s Discuss.

A night to showcase the American Dream. A Night to make up for lost time in the fashion world. The expectations were high, but did the highly anticipated event deliver? The theme was “American Independence,” it seemed perfect. Empowering and giving a voice to display the hardship we endured in these past two years through creativity. There were many extravagant appearances but did the biggest night go out with a bang? Here’s my take on the different elements that made headlines from the night.

Let’s Dive into the Guest List

There was drama as soon as the fake seating chart circulated on social media. The Met Gala is viewed as the most glamorous fashion night that makes history. Was it really ready to make room for influencers? My honest opinion, not quite yet. While I am aware they are a huge part of pop culture and evolving to create new definitions of fame, it is still difficult to get behind it. The Met Gala is the best of the best, award shows are one thing but it’s the ‘MET GALA’. The quick rise to fame definitely is the factor that makes it most difficult to comprehend, there are tons of celebrities that have been in the game for so long, and have yet to receive THE invite. While I am supportive of the guest list of the Met Gala evolving to impactful voices in today’s like athletes and political figures, the beauty of the Met Gala is the exclusivity. There is a traditional sense to the Met Gala that in my opinion is not ready to be altered. On the note of influencers, I didn’t mind Emma Chamberlain there, she has an interest in fashion, works with brands such as Louis Vuitton and imposes an interesting creative vision that fits into the Met Gala in my opinion. So moral of the story, the Met Gala needs to revisit the roots, all for fashion.

A lengthy list indeed, but these are all the looks that I thought were classy and looked sharp, they caught my attention on the Met Gala steps. While I did enjoy these looks I don’t think I was necessarily gasping at any of them. I expect HUGE at the Met Gala and I felt like most of the looks from the night were not quite as big as I anticipated from the lonnggg anticipated wait. Although I was amongst many eager to look through all the looks from my couch I still wanted more. (Awful of me I know!) The elegance of Kendall Jenner’s and Kaia Gerber’s looks were really show stopping. Also, circling back to Emma Chamberlain I thought that her look was simple enough as her first Met look but also caught my attention. It was wonderful and fit her style. But I was still left wanting MORE!

On Theme?

Were there powerful silhouettes that incorporated historic features from Audrey Hepburn and Marylin Monroe for example, yes. But, was that enough? There was certainly chaos or too much simplicity in some of the looks. I was taken aback by how many looks made me actually question why they were even there. And while I have no place to judge, I can’t help it, again it’s the MET GALA!!! Now, Kim’s look, yes shocking I know! Did I like it? Well, I didn’t like it. I thought it was definitely making a statement and was for sure going to make fashion history, it was bold and that I can appreciate. The looks that had a strong message, a story behind the cloth that was being showcased on the iconic steps were the ones that truly made an impact on me.

The Met Gala showed us that you will never get what you expect. And I don’t think that’s bad or let’s face it, the night would be boring. I think that the Met Gala has time to evolve and become even more spectacular. The anticipation of the next guest list and all the looks that we wait all year for are already making me itch with curiosity. But, I truly want the Met Gala to sustain the luxury and tasteful night that it is, we can’t let social media ruin an event that goes back so far into history. We want it to evolve but some things are not meant to be ruined. Until next year for another MET GALA review.
