Earlier this month, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to forgo their royal titles and status as working members of the royal family. The couple will be stepping back from their royal duties and renouncing their HRH titles in favor of a “normal life” outside of the family. Now you may be asking, why would they leave? Well I’m here to give you the basic rundown of the so called “Megxit” for the rest of us Americans.

Harry and Meghan leaving the palace and their royal duties may not seem like such a big deal in the grand scheme of life. However, their decision has left a lot of royal watchers confused. If we start at the beginning, there are many reasons as to why Harry and Meghan would consider leaving. Unfortunately, one of their main reasons for stepping away include racist undertones from the British press.

From the moment Harry and Meghan announced their engagement, the media on both sides of the pond went wild over the news of Harry finally settling down. However, not all of the news that followed was congratulatory towards the couple. Many British news sources began the comparison of Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, holding Kate at a higher caliber than Meghan. For example, there are countless lists on how Meghan breaks royal family protocol, which includes everything from nail polish & handbags to simply opening her own car door. Many of the criticisms towards Meghan seemed to grow after the wedding and the birth of her son, Archie. One horrible tweet from BBC 5 presenter Danny Baker likens Archie to a chimpanzee, which is unacceptable.

This intrusive media coverage on the family seemed to send Harry and Meghan over the edge, ultimately leading to their departure from the family. The most horrifying thing about what is happening to them is that it is reminiscent of what happened to Harry’s mother, Princess Diana.

Allegedly, Diana’s death was affected by the paparazzi, which is scarily similar to how Harry and Meghan are currently being treated. This horrible tragedy is one of the main reasons why Harry and Meghan have decided to leave: for the safety of their family and wellbeing.

I fully support their decision to leave a toxic situation in order to gain peace of mind. Harry and Meghan are a beautiful couple and deserve to have all the peace and quiet that they can get. Currently, Harry, Meghan and Archie are in Canada and have sorted out everything with the rest of the royal family. The couple plans to resume their charity work and continue to make a difference in the world, regardless of their royal status.
