The newest season of project runway is a must-watch! Full of innovative designers, tough challenges, inclusive models, drama, and heartwarming moments, make for a great season of this long-running reality show. (No spoilers ahead!)
Project Runway season nineteen proved to be challenging for all of the designers but for the first time in the show’s history, there were four women finalists. Each of them rightfully earning their place in the finale made for some phenomenal New York Fashion Week final collections. Beyond the four finalists, this season emphasized inclusivity through their models, having all sizes, skin tones, gender spectrums and more. Their challenges were thoughtful, highlighting small businesses, Black hairstylists, and more.Â
Chasity Sereal’s collection surrounded the theme of identifying as the black sheep; she conceptualized this idea through her collection. By incorporating her style of glamor, beading, and Disney princess silhouettes, she created something fresh yet on-brand for her style. I personally loved this collection, this aesthetic appeals to me the most out of all the contestants because of the extravagance of it. Chastity was a contestant I rooted for throughout the whole series, even beyond her incredible creations, but because of her openness surrounding her struggles with mental health, her father’s death, and the positive role model she hopes to be for her daughters.Â
Kristina Kharlashkina’s collection focused on prints and really pushed the boundaries with her silhouettes, colors, and patterns. Easily the contestant to be most experimental with her models by having the model wearing the finale look roll out on a hoverboard. Kristina’s collection came together in the end, but during the creation, it seemed conflicting like it could win honorably or lose horribly. Thankfully, in the end, her collection came together to be something unique and stand out compared to the other designers.Â
Coral Castillo was definitely the underdog going into the finale, being the only contestant to not win a challenge throughout the competition. Coral’s final collection was based on the roots of her Hispanic heritage which translated beautifully to her collection. Her signature details of using macrame braiding was a refreshing concept throughout the entire competition and shown in her final collection. Coral was the only contestant to use a male model, her inspiration was being a single mother and her relationship with her son. Coral’s collection was stunning and cohesive, really pulling out all the stops to create memorable looks.Â
Shantall Lacayo’s final collection focused on empowering women with wearable, well-created looks. The most notable part of Shantalls collection was the craftsmanship, the delicate weaving she used to create multiple looks paid off in the end with a stunning runway show. Her opening and closing looks were some of the best of the show. Her hard work and success on this show was well earned, her creativity and ingenuity when approaching fashion is definitely looking forward, pushing where fashion will take us tomorrow. Shantalls collection was inspiring and breathtaking, she pushed the boundaries of fashion while still staying true to who she is.Â
Overall this season of project runway is definitely one to check out because of the fabulous designers and inclusivity.
