Profile: Grace Braun-Fales, Temple’s very own animal rights advocate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Temple University junior Grace Braun-Fales may be a Communication Studies major at school, but she has a lifesaving mission on the side. Braun-Fales spends her weekends volunteering at the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Having grown up raising dogs her whole life, Braun-Fales is very passionate about animal welfare. As a child, she was an avid equestrian and leased a horse; she would love to eventually have her own stable and raise horses. This animal-lover enjoys having many animals and claims she has no fears of any. According to Braun-Fales, she could “totally pick up a spider and be fine with it.”

Currently, she has a cat named Frank (named after the character on “Shameless,” of course), a snake named Apollo, and two dogs — a German Shepard named Memphis and a mixed named Maggie, who was adopted from a local shelter. When Braun-Fales rescued Maggie, she had been horribly abused. She was super skinny and didn’t like being in the presence of men. After personally witnessing the struggle of raising Maggie, Braun-Fales realized she never wanted to see any animal suffer again, stating that “it is really sad to see animals who will be scared for the rest of their life.”

Braun-Fales would love to use her degree to go to law school and eventually become a lawyer who works with child custody cases, as well as continuing with animal advocacy. In the meantime, she welcomes new volunteers at the PSPCA to help her continue the fight. She claims the process is very simple and the applications are available online. Braun-Fales is in the process of moving up levels in volunteer training and plans to work with a behavioral specialist in the near future.
