The 92nd Academy Awards, otherwise popularly known as the Oscars, was a huge hit this year. Following their same plans as the previous year, the Oscars had no host, and simply had various actors appear on stage throughout the show. Are we a fan of this? Personally, I think that the Oscars should have a comedic host to make the show more entertaining, but maybe that’s just me.

Although the red carpet was a bit wet from some unexpected rain, it didn’t stop the fashionable celebrities from making appearances. Actress Scarlett Johanson popped off with her beige, slim fitting Oscar de la Renta dress. A few other standouts were the gorgeous Charlize Theron in her Dior Haute Couture black gown and sparkling Tiffany & Co. Jewelry, along with her co-star in the movie “Bombshell” Margot Robbie, who wore a black dress by Chanel. An honorable mention is Spike Lee, who wore purple in honor of the recently deceased Koby Bryant. Regina King stood out in her shockingly intriguing pink gown by Versace, giving off serious “Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz” vibes. The iconic Billie Eilish, known for her tomboy style, also turned heads with her white Chanel matching set. Lastly, Janelle Monae stunned in her beautiful Ralph Lauren gown. The silver mixed in with the sparkles and cute hood really made this dress an iconic look that fans were definitely not expecting.

As for awards, Joaquin Phoenix won the award for Best Actor in a leading role for his work in The Joker, and Renee Zellweger won the award for Best Actress for her performance in Judy. The handsome Brad Pitt won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood directed by Quentin Tarintino. Laura Dern won her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the movie Marriage Story, which I highly recommend to watch on Netflix right now, and be ready with some tissues. My childhood dream came true when Toy Story 4 won for Best Animated Feature Film. As far as cinematography goes, 1917 was definitely deserving of their big win. As a history buff like myself, this movie really captured some amazing shots. It also won for Best Visual Effects and Sound Mixing which was to be expected. Lastly, Bong-Joon Ho won an astounding six Oscars for his film Parasite. This movie made history for the Oscars by becoming the first film to win Best Picture that is in a foreign language. It really proved that there are such amazing films out there that are yet to be discovered because they are subtitled. Often times, we tend to ignore foreign movies, because we don’t like to read the English sub texts. Speaking as one of those people, I am definitely going to be watching more foreign films.

Bong-Joon Ho was so humble in accepting his Oscar that it went viral on Twitter. The pure happiness on his face really showed how honored he was to win Best Picture. A couple of other honorable memes were Billie Eilish and her camera angles, Idina Menzel’s funny camera shot, and Timothee Chalamet’s Pokémon Go-looking outfit. And you cannot ignore Natalie Portman’s iconic embroidered cape with the names of female directors who weren’t nominated by the Academy. There has been a ton of controversy on Twitter about her cape with people arguing whether or not this was a brave act or just simply offensive. Either way, the 2020 Oscars was full of surprises and remarkable cinema from the year. These awards have the power to open people’s eyes to different kinds of film, and I cannot wait to see how the film industry continues to diversify.
