In our current age, we have a lot of solo artists playing in our radios, which I do not think is a bad thing, but I am someone who really enjoys bands. I really do not take my time to get into other artists than the ones I already love, but lately I have been trying other Spotify playlists than the ones I create, and I have been finding really cool music. Recently, I found a band named Nasty Cherry. Nasty Cherry is formed by four girls: Gabi the lead singer, Debbie the drummer, Chloe the guitarist, and Georgia the bassist.

Nasty Cherry’s sound is pop but also a bit of rock, and their lyrics are very romantic, but in a truthful way. What I mean by this is that they do not sing about relationships in the romanticized ways I am used to, as if everything in relationships is beautiful and perfect. A great example of this is the song “Live Forever” because it depicts a relationship that is presented to the world as normal, but there is actually more to the surface. Another song that demonstrates the reality and vulnerability in relationships is “What Do You Like in Me,” which is about what a significant other sees in you that makes them like you. This song shows the humanity of relationships and not just the fantasy I often hear in today’s music.

I am not very fond of mainstream music which is common nowadays, and discovering this band made me understand why. I initially thought it was because of their sound that made them so different from mainstream artists, but I think it is actually what they sing about and how they portray themselves. This can be seen in the song “I Am King” because it embraces women and the pleasures that come with it that are natural. This is something I find important that needs to be derived from the content spread in media platforms.

Another aspect that made me love Nasty Cherry is the members of the band themselves. They are women that are portrayed very confident of who they are. They are women embracing their femininity in ways we are not used to seeing in celebrities. They have pictures with hair in their armpits, and I feel I should not be impressed by this because hair is normal, but I do not see many mainstream artists embracing their body hairs. I feel as if they were redefining what it means to be a woman through their music and their style.

Nasty Cherry made me feel empowered. They were not singing about how they hate men and how men made their lives miserable, but they were singing about love as complicated as it is while looking like different types of women and this made me feel like I can make femininity look however I want and also be in love. This is something I could not correlate for a long time and now I can see how to relate both femininity and love. Many aspects of media shape our lives, and Nasty Cherry has made me feel at peace with being a woman that does not shave, loves love and is empowered. Most importantly, these are things I really couldn’t put together before, but now they make sense to me thanks to this band.
