Let’s face it ladies, how many times have we heard that sports is a “guy’s thing”? Sure, guys and girls can both play sports, but when it comes to knowing game strategy and statistics, we are such girls. So naturally, sports’ broadcasting, a male-dominated profession, is way out of our league, right? Lindsey Bitler, the Temple 21 year old BTMM and history major proves us wrong.
going to learn what football is. Since then she has never stopped being a fan, “There is nothing better than highfiving random strangers because Temple just got a touchdown, or a last second basket,” Lindsey says, and this passion and energy she radiates to others led her to her first internship with the Eagles Television Network (ETM).
Diving head first into the world of sports reporting, she began with researching for feature stories logging footage, and doing statistics for the jumbo-tron. The following year, never afraid to try something new, this incredible senior helped produce “Countdown to Kickoff”, a weekly radio show where she cut clips for broadcast interviews and interviewed players. When going for her dreams, Lindsey is the ideal player- she keeps on going, not letting any obstacles or fears inhibit her from her dreams.
Her hard work and persistence has paid off, and now Lindsey works part time for the Eagles Television Network as a statistician and tech operator, having worked for them for three seasons and the Philadelphia Flyers for one. “I love being at the games, I can keep a little bit of the fan with me,” Lindsey says, always energetic and positive. Her passion for sports and her immense skills working with ETM has kept her working with the Eagles, a very rare yet amazing occurrence, especially in the media field. Lindsey hopes (and there is no doubt she will) to work as a television producer for a major sports network or league. Always smiling and positive, she wants to “get the fans ready”, getting the opportunity to be a little subjective and look at the outcome of the game in a different, more positive way.
Lindsey is not only successful, extremely kind and energetic, but she is a role model to women who want to follow their passions and dreams and do what they love, especially in male-dominated fields where it can be difficult and intimidating. As advice to her female “fans”, Lindsey says “You have to be persistent and you have to not think of yourself as a woman in sports. Think of yourself as someone doing a great job in sports and that’s how you earn respect. That’s the reputation you want.”
As a woman, a fan, a reporter, and a person, Lindsey’s positivity, enthusiasm and perseverance radiates throughout campus and into the world of sports broadcasting. Seeing her love of sports fuel her passion to achieve her dreams, no girl should be intimidated by a few guys in a big industry. Lindsey reminds us that being a female is not the only thing that defines who we are. “As proud as I am to be a female intern, I’m more proud of the accomplishment of working with the Eagles and the Flyers and being able to make my own name. I’m not just ‘that girl’, I’m Lindsey.”
