Mean Girls is Coming to Broadway, and We’re Like, Really Excited About It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Mean Girls, Tina Fey’s iconic 2004 chick-flick, is coming to Broadway this spring – finally. Not only does Mean Girls reign over all others in its genre, it has shaped the American teen experience in more ways than one.

Like, honestly, what other film so perfectly depicts the sweat and tears of our youth but makes us laugh instead of cry? Without Mean Girls, early October would be the lesser part of the month, dressing up as a mouse for Halloween would be even more basic than is today (duh), and teenage sex would be even more of a taboo topic.

You’re lying if you didn’t spend at least a third of your middle school/high school weekends curled up with a blanket and a tub of Ben and Jerry’s (Or, if you’re from my family, Rita’s water ice – but, whatever) with Mean Girls playing on the TV. And, like most Lindsay Lohan movies, you found it innocently inspiring – in the way that getting hit by a bus is cute, a 17-year-old guy dumps a hot girl for plagiarizing on a test, and Linds turns into an anti-bullying advocate who also wins a math competition. That’s why it’s fiction, but again, whatever.

Now, if it’s possible – Broadway will make all of this even better. On top of knowing every line of the movie, we’ll be able to add it to our queue to sing in the shower. Ultimate pre-game playlist – love me or hate me, you know it’ll be on there.

The musical is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, and stars Erika Henningsen as Cady Heron. It was adapted from a book written by Tina Fey, which is based of off her original screenplay for the movie.

The added bonus – although the Broadway premiere opens on April 8, Mean Girls will debut in DC starting October 31 for a trial-run before it hits the big stage. Visit thenationaldc.org for tickets to the DC production, or stop by the August Wilson Theatre box office today – or visit http://www.broadway.com/shows/mean-girls/ – to purchase seats at the New York showing.

Tickets are on sale today – It’s October 3 – so swipe them before they’re sold out.

A few cool people will be there, and you better be one of them, biotch.
