***HCTU Spoiler Alert***
The third season of WE tv’s, “Kendra on Top” premiered last Friday, and the episode was far from the funny and light ones of the previous seasons. Let me tell you, it was a tough one. Just a warning; you might even need a box of tissues to get through this recap. Here we go.
The show opened with a simple message. “On June 23, 2014 Kendra’s husband Hank was implicated in a shocking sex scandal. Our cameras were there.”
Boom. Images flashed across the screen. Tabloids. Headlines. Cheating. Sex scandal. Torrid sex romp. Transsexual.
Then the real footage began. Kendra’s friend Jessica drove to her house to comfort her after receiving a distraught phone call from the former Playboy model. The bubbly Kendra we all know and love was replaced with one who was sobbing on the living room floor. She sat up and explained that while her infant daughter Alijah was upstairs sleeping, her husband Hank had taken their 4-year-old son Hank Jr. to stay with family in New Mexico after news of the scandal hit.
“I have no one,” she said, tears falling.
As Jessica questioned whether or not the rumor of Hank having an affair with a transsexual was true, Kendra spoke to the camera and recounted the call that she got from her manager breaking the news. There were facts. There was evidence. The tabloids were running the story. Oh, and it allegedly happened while she was eight months pregnant with their little girl.
“I felt like I was getting shot. I couldn’t even breathe.”
At this point, I’d realized that I hadn’t taken a breath since the opening message.
Kendra continued and spoke about what an amazing man she thought her husband was, up until that point. She had the perfect man, family and life. Cue the wedding flashbacks and the tears. Hers and mine.
“Talk about the fakest happiness feeling ever.”
Before the cheating news broke, filming for the new season of the show had already begun. What were producers going to do with all of the pre chaos footage? Show it, obviously.
You can imagine how unprepared I was when the scene cut to five weeks earlier, when a very pregnant Kendra was enjoying a typical night with Hank talking about their impending arrival. It was like old times…. except weirdly foreshadowing. Kendra asked if they would stay married and if her husband would be over her after having two kids. He said no, but clearly actions speak louder than words. Then, back to reality.
“I flushed my wedding rings down the toilet. The wedding album is in the pool. I cut up his wedding suit. I’m gonna pack up his stuff, and throw it in a dumpster. It’s done.”
Another flashback…. This time to the birth of baby Alijah. Hank and Kendra seemed more in love than ever as they prepared for the delivery of their baby via C-section. She even bit his finger until Alijah came into the world. Viewers watched as Hank Jr. met his baby sister for the first time and she was absolutely beautiful. The family cried together. Hank even surprised Kendra with a visit from her grandmother. After being estranged from most of her family for years, she couldn’t have been happier. Kendra let her know that the baby’s middle name was Mary in honor of her, and things couldn’t have been better.
Cue the crying because I’d gone through half of my tissues at this point. Knowing what was about to break the beautiful family only made it that much harder to watch.
Back to the present again. After going into her back yard, Kendra noticed that drones and paparazzi helicopters were circling over her house. So much for privacy. After a furious call to her manager in which he asked her “Well why did you go outside?” She lost it. Things were officially a mess and she was a prisoner in her own home.
Kendra hit her breaking point when she finally decided to call her now estranged husband. She demanded to know when he would bring their son home, but he wouldn’t give her a definite answer. All he said was soon, and that just wasn’t good enough.
“Who am I to trust you right now? Do I have to go get him myself?”
The episode came to a depressing close as Kendra spilled all of the breast milk she had just prepared for her daughter. The baby started to cry and the phone began ringing, all while a distraught Kendra tried to pump again. The house was empty, and she was on her own.
If the first episode was that intense, I can only imagine what the rest of the season will bring. It’s going to be a rollercoaster.
