College is such an odd time. You often find yourself questioning your initial decisions But, I think at the end of the day, you know what it is you want. Don’t be scared not to know which major to pick, don’t be afraid to switch out of a major or add another. This chapter is a learning process, and everyone will agree that it’s not a comfortable journey in the slightest, but you can control if this becomes a time of fun and enjoyment or not.

When I first started school, I had my mindset on doing something with Communications. What exactly? I do not know. I began to spark an interest in something and looked into news broadcasting, which unfortunately didn’t work for me. I knew I had an interest, but it wasn’t strong enough to dive into that sector full speed. I then took up writing, and my love for writing came back. It works as a de-stressor for me, and I just find it fun. Do I think I could make a career out of writing? Probably not if I’m being honest. Then, I was exposed to brand marketing and advertising which is something I think I’m interested in. I honestly believe that college has been a learning experience for me. I figured out what exactly I like, and I got the platform to branch out and try these things before it’s “too late.”

College is truly a time for you to come into yourself and decide what interests you and what doesn’t. I highly recommend joining clubs and organizations to start the process early. If I hadn’t joined the one organization at my school, I wouldn’t have known that news broadcasting and editing is simply not for me, which is perfectly okay. If you join something and it turns out that it doesn’t interest you as much as you thought it would, then you can remove yourself.

Luckily, I think I’ve finally found my niche. Public Relations is so broad of a field that I could take it quite literally anywhere. So I’m focusing on that and brand marketing while still writing to get my daily fix. Join clubs, talk to your friends, and advisors on what your strong suits are from an outside perspective. If you only look at yourself, you could be underselling your talent. I’ve always thought that I wasn’t a great writer, but hearing from other people say that my writing is good and they like the content I put out is something that has made me step back from evaluating myself. I now look outside of me to get recommendations and criticism. You are your biggest fan and your biggest hater.

Take this time in your life to step back and find what you like to do. No one is saying you need to have an answer now because you don’t but, at least spend your time doing things you want, and you might find yourself switching majors or adding a minor as I did, and that is without a doubt perfectly okay to do. Don’t stress about it too much. Go with the flow!

I am a freshman communication studies major with a minor in public relations. I am passionate about proving black women a platform to share their stories and live in their truth.
