The month of April holds many significant events worth celebrating. One that’s worth celebrating every day is Earth Day! In today’s society the concept of “going green” has invaded mainstream society and has fueled an awareness that the earth is in a detrimental state from the effects of human behavior. The concept of going green refers to wisely using the limited available resources the planet has and reevaluating typical lifestyles functions and necessities to become more conscious of the earth.

To show our participation in the efforts of going green, Temple University has started a campaign in recycling bottles, glass, plastic and paper. Even though these habits do plenty to preserve the earth, it wouldn’t hurt to explore other options in recycling.

For instance, picture that shirt or pair of jeans you are no longer able to fit due to the freshmen 15. Departing from it seems almost impossible because you tell yourself that you will eventually get back into them, but realistically you know they are just taking up space in your closet.  In the spirit of going green, one option is to recycle them.

You ask, “How do you recycle them without giving up your favorite clothes?” Easy: reinvent your shirt.

Here is a step by step of how to transform that shirt into a chic bag.

Step 1: You will need a shirt, a needle and thread (if you do not have a sewing machine), scissors and any other cool items such as button or pins to make your bag unique.

Step 2: Take the t-shirt, cut off the neck and the arm part of the shirt.

Step 3: Depending on the size you want your bag to be cut the shirt into two squares.

Step 4: Hand stitch the sides and the bottoms together, leaving only one side opened.

Step5: Lastly, use the scrapes of the shirt to make handles for the bag.

These short and simple steps are a sure way to look fashionable and eco-friendly. Everyone has unique style so dress the shirt/bag to your liking and give yourself a pat on the back for being a “green” gal.
