How-To Make the Most of Your Social Media as a Millennial

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

According to a study by Pew Research Center, 92% of teens are going online daily, and nearly 24% of those teens say they are online “constantly.” With this constant communication, combined with the instant gratification of social media notifications, the importance of maintaining a good social media presence is more prevalent than ever.

Though most millennials may have a natural born talent for navigating Apple products, it’s impossible to become a social media mogul overnight.  However, if you follow these tips, you’ll be well on your way to racking up followers…and a following.

1. Use Hashtags Wisely

Social Media Examiner says, “Stop using random acts of hashtagging.” Hashtags are an easy, quick way to join in on conversations, and get other people interested in your thoughts or brand, so it’s important to use them effectively to generate interest.

2. Avoid Spamming

Line25.com calls spam a “Twitter crime.” As an aspiring professional, try not to tweet out your own articles or any sort of self-promotion too often. It’s better to develop a rhythm and a strategy when posting content than to bombard your followers with the same listicle you’ve written. If your audience sees “too much” of you at once, they may unfollow you if you’re hogging the timeline spotlight.

3. The Golden Rule

Forbes.com calls this the “follow-first rule,” and says this is the best way to gain followers. When building an online presence, it’s up to the Twitter user to seek potential followers first. Try following individuals who may be interested in what you have to say, or can contribute to your conversation. If you pique their interest, you’ll earn a loyal follower!

4. Be Genuine

Stay true to your own brand, and be truthful in your engagements and responses to your followers: especially potential employers. It’s best to develop a particular “style” or voice on social media, to give your followers an inside look of who you are as a person. If you have a great sense of humor, show it off (within reason)!
