Picture this: it is 7 AM on your assigned class registration day as you wait anxiously for 7:05 to approach so you can search quickly and pray that your top choice classes are still available.  Far too often the case is that you do not get that top choice, even if you absolutely need it toward your major.  Sometimes, the class times are overlapping or you end up with four classes in one day.  Needless to say, not many students will say that they don’t stress, almost to the point of mental breakdowns over registering for the next semester’s classes.  Eliminating the stress may be impossible, but there are many ways for you to lessen the pain of registration day.

Planning is key!

As soon as your school releases the next semester’s course catalog, your first course of action should be to see what is available and go from there.  Take into consideration what requirements you still have to fill as well as classes that interest you.  Start drafting up mock schedules, all with a different variety of classes and requirements.  If the catalog has class times, even better.  Make at least three different plans so you can have backups for your backups.

Prepare yourself in the days beforehand.

The night before you choose your classes, try to relax and go to sleep early.  Wake up bright and early, make yourself some breakfast and get yourself logged into your registration portal about 10 minutes early so you do not feel rushed and quite as anxious.  Although the anxiety cannot be completely diminished, giving yourself a good start to your morning may help you feel better prepared.  Another thing you could do weeks in advance to prepare is meet with your advisor to discuss what they recommend for you and how you can set up your schedule for a successful semester.

Tell Yourself… IT WILL ALL WORKOUT

It may not seem like it in the moment, but no matter what, you can and will find the classes you need to take.  Maybe you do not get to take the required class for your major this semester, but eventually you will be able to and you will have an earlier opportunity to choose your class the more credits you complete. Take a breath before you register and make sure you take some time to relax afterwards.  It is an overwhelming experience that you unfortunately have to go through, but remember you are not alone.

What is probably some of the most stressful five minutes of your semester, class registration does not have to be as horrific as possible.  Making and following a solid plan is your best bet at coming out successful and happy with your schedule.  Try not to overbook yourself with more credits than you know you can handle. Most of all breathe!  You will get through it.
