If you haven’t heard about the media’s latest fascination, Anna Sorokin (who also goes by the name Anna Delvey), I’d have to assume you’d be living under a rock. Sorokin has been gracing headlines for weeks, as her life experiences have been documented in Netflix’s new series Inventing Anna. Now these stories and experiences, some real and others potentially made up, have been deemed wild by the public…even leaving celebrities in awe of what she’s gotten away with.

Anna Sorokin Explained

On Wikipedia, Anna Sorokin is said to be a “Russian-German convicted con artist and fraudster.” Many have called her “the soho grifter,” who conned Manhattan’s elite out of hundreds of thousands of dollars on luxury hotels, expensive restaurants, and anything else that helped create her heiress aesthetic. It’s been said that Sorokin claimed she was a German Heiress named Anna Delvey, who had an extremely wealthy father in Germany. The elite trusted Anna and let her into their world, just as she was stealing from right under their noses. In May 2019, Anna Sorokin was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison, fined $24,000, and ordered to pay restitution for around $199,000. On February 11th, 2022, Netflix released the limited series Inventing Anna, which provides a loose retelling of the events that landed Sorokin in prison. The release of this series has brought Sorokin back into the spotlight, a place any observer can tell she greatly enjoys.

Anna’s C list BFF

As Sorokins story has become popularized from the release of the series, old friends have come out of the woodwork. Someone whose virality arised at a similar timing to Sorokin, is actress and model Julia Fox. Fox claims herself to be New Yorks “#1 Hustler,” and has been active in the New York scene for quite some time. For someone like me who tunes more into the Hollywood scene rather than the lives of Manhattan’s elite, I first heard of Fox when she started dating famous rapper Kanye West. West and Fox embarked on a six week long romance, from January 2022 to around mid February. Throughout this time, they attended fashion shows, upscale dinners, red carpets; all whilst being clowned on by the internet for their unique style, and Fox’s similar appearance to West’s ex, Kim Kardashian. During their relationship, Fox also made appearances on podcasts like Alexandra Coopers Call Her Daddy. While on the podcast, Fox was asked about being West’s current muse, to which Fox said, “Yeah. A little. I mean, I was Josh Safdie’s muse when he wrote Uncut Gems, you know?”This quote immediately went viral, specifically on the popular platform Tik Tok, and has only elongated Fox’s five minutes of fame.

Shockingly enough, Sorokins and Fox have recently reported that they have a relationship with one another. Recently, Fox shared an article Sorokin wrote for Business Insider on her Instagram story, calling Anna her “dear sis” and saying Sorokin is “killing it from behind bars.” In an interview with the New York Times, Sorokin commented on their relationship saying, “We have some mutual friends — she is a girl about town. She jumped on my Clubhouse [and] I was answering people’s questions about my experience, and she made the forum so much better. She asked all the right questions [and] she was never judgmental, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since.” This mystery relationship was surprising enough, but Sorokin and Fox recently announced that they also have  “creative projects” in the works with one another.

Anna on SNL

Along with individual celebrities, the media as a whole has been commenting on the life of Sorokin. On March 5th, 2022, popular variety show Saturday Night Live put on a sketch about the TV series. Actress Chloe Fineman starred in the sketch titled “Inventing Chloe,” where she was “Delvy-ing” everyone in the office. This “delvy-ing” terminology is a play on the name she used professionally, Anna Delvey. The sketch poked fun at Sorokin’s accent, her continuous promise to wire transfer money, her demanding nature, along with her high end taste. The sketch used a lot of quotes and scenarios from the Netflix series, some of which are now going viral on Tik Tok.

Anna on Tik Tok

In an argument with her boyfriend from the show, Sorokin shouts, “I do not have time for this, I do not have time for you!” Countless popular creators and brands such as popular Youtuber Eva Gutowski, WarHeads Candy, and the channel Food Network, have made TikToks to this popular sound.

Anna Sorokin has truly become the newest meme. Quotes from her television show keep topping the popular sounds on Tik Tok, and she remains in headlines weeks after the show’s release. The internet has developed a sort of love for the flawed character of Sorokin, praising her ability to steal from the rich while also poking fun at her accent and the rash things she is willing to say. I’m not sure if we’ll ever truly know the real Anna Sorokin, but I can personally say I enjoy hearing about who she might be.
