Harry Styles is Releasing New Music and We Are Not Ready

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Life has not been quite the same since One Direction decided to go on a “break.” Lucky for all 1D fans, each of the members of the band–yes, we are including Zayn even though he left back in 2015–has been gracing us with new music (or new babies). Harry Styles is the most recent band member to release new music, and honestly, the world is shook.

On April 7, 2017 at midnight, Styles released his new, nearly six minute-long, single, “Sign of the Times,” leaving fans everywhere feeling #blessed. The 23-year-old singer has been talking about releasing his own music for quite some time now, and this is his debut single as a solo artist. Styles co-wrote this hit and the video is set to drop later in the month.

The song accents Styles’ incredible vocal range; his powerful voice is what captivates the listener. Although there are some aspects of rock that are apparent in the new single, there are still many qualities that make the song sound like a pop hit. At almost six minutes, the song may seem like an excessive length considering it is a single, but if anyone can get away with it, it’s Harry.

Just a week after the song’s release, “Sign of the Times” officially dethroned Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” as the #1 spot on the charts. Of course, Sheeran couldn’t be happier for his friend’s newfound success as a solo singer.

This taste of new music has us all ready to finally hear the singer’s highly anticipated debut album, and Styles finally told us when that day will come. On May 12, 2017, Styles will drop his first self-titled album with ten brand new songs. He released the track listing on Instagram and some of the titles, such as “Meet Me In the Hallway,” “Kiwi,” and “From the Dining Table,” have fans eager to see what the songs could be about.

This weekend, Harry performed as a solo artist live for the first time on Saturday Night Live, singing both his hit “Sign of the Times,” as well as a new song titled, ”Ever Since New York.” With all of this talk of new music, fans are hoping to see more of Styles, and they will, when he performs on The Graham Norton Show in the coming weeks.

May 12 surely cannot come soon enough, but for now we’ll keep “Sign of the Times” on repeat.
