Crocs were originally made by three friends: Lyndon “Duke” Hanson, Scot Seamans, and George Boedecker Jr., to be the ugly-yet-comfortable shoe used for activities such as boating. The versatility and durability of the shoes gave the brand a leg-up compared to their competition, making the demographic widespread across all sorts of backgrounds and ages. In 2005, Jibbitz came out. These decorative charms used for Crocs were eventually acquired by the company, turning them into a package deal. Originally created for children, wearers of all ages enjoy customizing their shoes with Jibbitz today. After a financial crisis in the 2010s, Crocs found their way onto the runway at London Fashion Week in 2017, leading brands and celebrities rushing to collaborate.
- Crocs x Disney
What inspired me to investigate Crocs’ large list of collaborators are the new Crocs x Disney Headbands. They are Minnie and Mickey Mouse headbands with the classic ear shapes that Disney is known for, this time with Crocs’ signature rubber material and holes that allow for Jibbitz, if you desire. The headbands come in multiple colors with or without a bow to match depending on if you’re in a Mickey or a Minnie mood.
Crocs has had plenty of collabs with Disney throughout the years through Jibbitz, clogs, and bags. Most of which are available online right now alongside the headbands. Crocs and Disney have been collaborating for around 20 years now, their first collection together launching in 2006 with a selection of footwear inspired by Disney’s vast IPs such as the Disney Princesses and Pixar.
2. Crocs x Sports
The Crocs x NFL collection is perfect for any football fan of any team. Currently, you can purchase shoes, Jibbitz, and socks from the Crocs website relating to NFL teams. You can also purchase some items from Crocs’ collaborations with the NBA and the MLB, though these collections are not as large. Global Sports Desk highlights that Crocs’ partnership with the NFL gives the brand access to a highly loyal and deeply engaged fan base through one of the most influential sports leagues. They also point out that for the NFL, collaborations like this help move the league beyond traditional merchandise and further develop its presence in lifestyle and fashion markets.
3. Crocs x LEGO
Earlier this year, Crocs announced a “multi-year global partnership” with LEGO, known for their interlocking bricks enjoyed by all ages to fuel creative minds. Currently, you can purchase a variety of LEGO Crocs shoes and Jibbitz online. Throughout the next few years, these brands will be releasing new products together. There is no word yet on the details of the next product releases, but I am personally very excited to hear more in the future.
Crocs is a brand that clearly understands its customers and pays attention to the other brands they engage with. For example, recognizing its strong young female consumer base, Crocs has collaborated with LoveShackFancy to align with their style and interests. Building on this, the brand is also partnering with Hello Kitty and Friends later this month. By connecting with consumers across different ages and lifestyles, Crocs continues to strengthen its relevance and sustain its success.
