Couples Costumes : Some Inspiration for This Spooky Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

With Halloween rapidly approaching, those of us lucky enough to be celebrating with someone we love this year have a tough decision – whether or not we want to be “that” couple, the couple that decides to dress up together. Let’s face it, everyone knows the basics of couples costumes — the classic “officer and jailbird,” the infamous “Sandy and Danny,” and the fail-safe “life-guard” costumes.

But you don’t have to be basic with your S.O. this year, keep reading for some ideas that are slightly less “cringy” than the average duos.

Scoops A’Hoy Workers

For those “Stranger Things” fans, this is the perfect costume for you! Instead of doing a run-of-the-mill costume, this is something you’ll actually enjoy being dressed up as for the night! What better way to celebrate Halloween than dressed up as some of your favorite characters from this spooky Netflix series. It’s both original and easy to make your own if you prefer to buy pieces separately. Just buy the hats and save some cash!

Fairly Odd Parents

Cosmo and Wanda! Dress up as this ~fairly odd~ duo and just wait for the loads of praise you’ll get from your fellow Nickelodeon-loving friends. This costume is a fun way to express some of your love for this classic childhood show, and something you won’t run into at every party you go to.

Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable

Grab some cargo pants and a black shirt and you’re in action! This is a super easy and classic costume idea that can be made either family-friendly or party-ready. It’s another fun way to show some appreciation for one of your favorite childhood shows, and you won’t break your bank trying to do it.

The Tooth Fairy and Dentist

While it may seem a little corny, this idea is great if you have a partner who isn’t into costumes. Just buy them some cheap scrubs, slap a tooth on the front and *boom,* you’ve got a dentist while you live out your fairy-loving dreams! It’s a fun and quirky idea that is sure to wow at any party you go to, and will surely out-do the other couples.

Forrest Gump and Jenny

Trying to keep it simple and also original? Pay tribute to one of Tom Hank’s most famous roles, just buy the red cap, a plaid shirt, some bell bottoms and anything fringe, and you’re well on your way to being the pair! This is another great opportunity to personalize your costumes, make them yours!

Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider

If you’re looking to mix things up, combining these two treasure-hungry characters might be the way to go! This is a fun, sexy way to shake things up, without having to spend too much on costumes you’ll never wear again. Just buy a couple props to take with you, some brown pants and black tops.

Woody and Jessie

This Toy Story inspired costume is sure to impress at any occasion, whether it be trick or treating or a costume party. With some plaid shirts, cowboy hats and cowboy boots, you’ll be ready to go! Your costumes are sure to be pretty self-explanatory, and you could add a few more members of the gang in if you’re going with a group!

Daisy and Gatsby

What’s a more fabulous way to dress up for Halloween than getting to live like you’re in the roaring 20’s? Pick up a suit, a flapper dress and some hair spray, and you’ll be dressed to impress! This is a great option if you feel like going all out this year, it’s both fabulous and classy!

I hope that these ideas are some help, or may have inspired you and your partner to have some fun getting dressed up together this year! While some couple costumes are very cringe-worthy, you can take it as an opportunity to out-do them and to show some fun originality, make your costumes personal and something that both of you enjoy being dressed as for the night!
