Britney Spears is Showing Us the PERFECT Way to Handle a Breakup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Britney Spears has had her fair share of breakups. From Justin Timberlake, to Kevin Federline, the princess of pop has never failed to channel her post relationship emotions into some amazing anthems. If you haven’t blasted “Stronger” or “Womanizer” from your speakers, you’re missing out.

After the “…Baby One More Time” singer’s engagement to former manager Jason Trawick ended in December of 2012, fans were thrilled when she started dating someone outside of the spotlight a few months later. David Lucado, a lawyer from Virginia, was exactly the kind of low-key the mother of two needed… or so it seemed.

On August 28 after a year-and-a-half of dating Lucado, Spears shocked fans by announcing that she was once again single. No explanation was given until the media quickly reported on the story. According to TMZ, a video surfaced showing Brit’s former beau “making out with a woman and dancing with her.” The video was reportedly taken in someone’s living room and was shot in early August.

It couldn’t get any worse, could it? It did. The “Perfume” songstress’ father Jamie was the first one to hear about the video. In order to protect his daughter, he bought all copies of the video. In other words, if any person or website tries to publish the clip, they will be sued…like crazy. Sources say that Mr. Spears, who is still a conservator over 32-year-old Queen B, told his daughter about the scandal as soon as he found out. She immediately cut ties with the loser.

Because Britney is currently in the middle of her hugely successful two year Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood, fans can’t exactly blame her for not having time to instantaneously release the perfect single girl jam. However, she has been playing her cards perfectly in the difficult situation that most of us have had to go though at some point or another. We can all take a lesson from Britney and realize that a breakup is far from the end of the world. If he/she was dumb enough to do something damaging to you or your relationship, then that person isn’t and wasn’t worth your precious time anyway.

And now, the top five ways to move on from a bad breakup, as told by Britney Spears.

Tweet about it.No, this does not mean: “Die, jerk. #Single #DBag.” Go ahead and celebrate your newfound freedom! But do it the classy way. B simply tweeted: “Ahhhh the single life!” Since her split, she has shared photos of girlfriends partying it up with her in Vegas, as well as selfies with her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James. After making her new relationship status known, she hasn’t tweeted another word about it.

Keep busy.Aside from her insanely popular Vegas show (which is perfectly titled “Piece of Me,” by the way) Madonna’s gal pal has also been occupied with another new project. Her new lingerie line called the “Intimate Britney Spears Collection” debuted at New York Fashion Week and is now available online.

Remember all of the awesome benefits of being single.According to a video taken at her August 31 show, the “Gimme More” singer spoke briefly about the breakup on stage, just two days after the messy details came out. She said, “The best thing about your boyfriend cheating on you, is that you get to go on another first date!” That’s not all. DJ Pauly D, who previously opened up for Britney on tour, tweeted at the pop star: “I make a good rebound!! #JustSaying J” She’s also the owner of a new Tinder profile, created for her by none other than “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon. So, next time you feel like crying into a big bowl of ice cream, just think, “What would Britney do?” and go find someone who is way better than that lame ex.

Eliminate all contact.Sure, it can be easy to say, “I don’t need to unfollow him on Twitter and Instagram! Of course I’ll keep their number in my phone just for emergencies of course.” TMZ reported that Britney’s team has completely barred her ex from communicating with her. He has no way of getting in contact with her. It may seem harsh, but it is definitely for the best. Do yourself a favor and block your former significant other. The last thing you need is them drunk calling you at 3AM, saying that they just found your old camp t-shirt and they realized that they cant live without you. Also, as tempting as it may be to let them still be able to look at your flawless Instagram shots, there isn’t really any point. The only way to move on is to fully let go. The ties have to be cut.

Don’t take any post-breakup crap from your former lover.Trust me, that “I miss you, and I made a huge mistake” text is inevitable. They will immediately try to get you back, and to fix the situation. That fix will only be temporary; so do not fall for the emotional trap. Apparently, David Lucado is trying to pull the ultimate Ross Gellar by saying that he and Britney “were on a break” when the video was shot. Nice try buddy, but sugar coating the situation doesn’t change it. Good thing he has no way to tell her that sob story personally.

The moral of the story is this: forget whatever his name is. If he burned you, he doesn’t matter. Things like this can happen to anyone and the most important lesson to be learned is that the good ones take the high road, just like Britney has.
