Beginners Guide: How to act in a tattoo shop and how to prepare for your tattoo

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Eat & hydrate

Make sure that you have a full meal before your tattoo and drink plenty of water.  Getting a tattoo hurts and everyone’s body reacts differently. Your tattoo artist would rather have you take bathroom breaks than pass out from dehydration.

Check your hygiene

Make sure you have some deodorant on! Getting tattooed hurts and sometimes it makes you sweat more. Also don’t wear overpowering perfume. You might love the way Warm Vanilla Sugar from Bath & Body Works smells, but your artist might hate it.

Dress appropriately

If you’re getting a piece done of your leg, you might not want to show up in jeans. Also, just because its summer doesn’t mean the shop will be 75 degree. Bring a blanket or a hoodie.  Tattoos are uncomfortable, so do something to make it a little better!

Check the shop policy

See if you’re allowed to bring friends and how many. Too many friends can be a distraction to the tattoo artist and might be annoying for any other clients.

Make sure you have the appropriate aftercare

The next days might be a little busy and you might not be able to make it to the store. Make sure you get your aftercare before the appointment. The best to get is regular gold dial antibacterial soap and some good ol Aquaphor!

Don’t negotiate price

Tattoos aren’t cheap… and if they are… watch out!

Don’t ever ask a tattoo artist to lower their price. They are already giving you the best deal. You wouldn’t low ball Picasso, so don’t lowball your artist

Speak up!

Reminder: This is permanent! Don’t be afraid to let your artist know if you don’t like something.  They will work with you to give you the best piece possible.

Let’s talk placement

If you want a tiny tattoo, its probably best to get it on a small place like behind your ear, wrist or ankle. Don’t take up prime space that you might want to fill up later.

Tip!

Just like going out to dinner or getting you nails done, this is a service!  Be generous.  They just sat around for hours poking you with a needle.
