Beach Essentials You Actually Need (and What You Don’t)

Packing for a beach day always feels like it should be easy, but somehow it turns into stuffing your whole bag with things you might not even end up using. You think you will need multiple outfits a day, heavy makeup, and extra pair of everything, but by the end of the day, most of it just sits unused in your bag. Keeping things light will make your day less stressful and more fun. Here is a real list of what you actually need to bring and what you can leave home.

What You Actually Need:

  1. Good Swimsuits
This is what you will be wearing most of the day, so it should feel right on you. Choose ones that fit well and you feel good in, so you don’t have to keep adjusting all the time. When you feel good about it, you can just relax and enjoy your day without overthinking.

2. Sunglasses
Sunglasses are not just for style—the sun at the beach is brutally radiant, and sunglasses help protect your eyes. They also play a role in how much you are going to enjoy your experience at the beach, and they make you look put together.

3. Light Makeup
If you want to wear makeup, stick to the basics: a little mascara, an SPF skin tint and lip balm is enough. You don’t need a full routine at the beach; it will make you feel sticky, especially if you are sweating or have sensitive skin. It can clog your pores and cause you to break out.

4. A Light Cover-Up
A cover-up like an oversized shirt, shorts, or a loose dress, is perfect when you want a break from the sun or do some walking.

5. A Tote Bag
You don’t need anything fancy, just a bag big enough to hold your basics, so you’re not digging through your things all day.

6. Sunscreen
This is one of the most important things. You shouldn’t skip it. It is crucial that your skin is always protected every day. UV rays from the sun damage your skin, cause serious painful sunburns, and increase your risk of skin disease. Reapply it often, even if you don’t think you need to.

7. Face Mist or Wipes
After being in the sun and saltwater, your skin can start feeling itchy or dry. A quick wipe or mist helps you feel fresh again and relieve some of the uncomfortable sensations. If you don’t want to get other things dirty because you are sweaty or covered in sand, a mist or wipe can really help with that. Just remember to reapply your SPF afterwards.

What You Don’t Need:

  1. Too Many Outfits
Packing for the beach might have you thinking that you will need at least three outfit changes every day, but in reality, you’ll mostly stay in your swimsuit. Extra clothes just take up space and will have you carrying heavy bags all day, which can get especially inconvenient if you don’t have a place to put things down or move around easily.

2. A lot of Jewelry
You’d be surprised at how easy it is to lose things in the sand or ocean when playing games or just casual swimming, and once you do, it’s going to be nearly impossible retrieving it again. Better not risk it and leave anything small and valuable at home or your place of stay.

3. Fancy Shoes
The beach is not necessarily a place for closed-toe shoes like sneakers, boots, or ballet flats. You won’t be able to walk easily, and they will get covered in sand and dirt, which can be very hard to clean depending on the kind of shoe.

4. Towels that are too thick

Thick towels seem nice at first, but they are heavy, take up a lot of space, and take a long time to dry. They also make your bag bulky and harder to carry. In my opinion, a microfiber towel works much better: they’re light, compressible, fast to dry, and get the job done.

Going to the beach should feel easy and fun and not stressful. You don’t need to bring everything you own or might possibly need to have a good time. When you pack light and stick to the basics, you spend less time worrying and more time enjoying yourself. The beach is about relaxing, being in the moment, and feeling good, so keep it simple and trust what you really need.
