Are Lip Oils the New Lip Gloss?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Lip oils are all the rage right now, as more and more brands are introducing their versions of the new lip cosmetics. It all started when Dior released their lip oils in 2020, priced at $40. The product went viral on TikTok, with consumers raving about the non—sticky, hydrating version of lip gloss. Customers also enjoy the fact that the product does not clump or stick. The only downside was the high pricing of Dior’s version of the product. This was when other brands caught on and began making their own more affordable versions of the product.

There are of course tons of dupes on Amazon for the Dior lip oils, priced between $5 and $15. However, the reviews are not as grand as those for Dior. Makeup brand, E.L.F. just released their version of lip oils. Since the brand is known for its affordable yet great quality products, E.L.F. fans were excited to try it out. E.L.F.’s Glow Reviver Tinted Lip Oil, priced at only $8, was an instant success. Fans were immediately reviewing the product on TikTok, saying things like, “E.L.F. eats every time”, and that the formula was even better than Dior’s original version of the product. Consumers say it is less sticky, with a vibrant tint and moisturizing factors. Of course, the affordability of the product is what catches the eye of most consumers.

In addition to E.L.F. and Dior, Kylie Skin also sells a variety of hydrating lip oils. Priced at $25, these lip oils have different shades and tints, along with different flavors, such as coconut, passion fruit, watermelon, and more. In the very Kylie Jenner style, they come in different bundles as well, paired with varieties of other Kylie Skin and Kylie Cosmetics lip products, such as liners and glosses. While this product is priced in between the prices of E.L.F. and Dior, the product’s quality is very similar to both. All of the different tints have an average five-star rating on the Kylie Skin website, with over 2,000 ratings on each one.

Rare Beauty, founded by Selena Gomez, carries its own line of lip oils as well. The Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil is priced at $20. The tints of Rare Beauty’s lip oils seem to be the most pigmented out of all of the others I have seen. Unlike the other brands, whose oil comes with a wider application brush, Rare Beauty’s lip oil is in a normal lip gloss container with a thin applicator. Containing Jojoba seed oil, this product is known for its hydrating qualities.

Overall, with all these brands introducing their versions of this growing lip product, it seems like lip oils might be the new lip gloss and if you haven’t tried a version of this hydrating product, you should get your hands on it before they sell out for the holidays.
