I’m going to tell you a secret; are you ready for this? You have to promise to tell everyone. Okay here it goes. The 90’s have made a comeback!

For most of us the 90s are only memories that are replayed in our minds every time our parents post old baby photos on Facebook. While looking at those photos not only will you see that your parents had you dressed to impress, but also that the corduroys you sported at age two have reappeared in your closet at 19. With the announcement that filming for Girl Meets World has officially started, it’s only right to honor the 90s with some of the best fashion comebacks. Let’s admit it, some of the greatest fashion trends started in the good ol’ 90s.

The Crop Top

At one time or another we all had a Britney Spears phase. Every now and then I find myself singing “Oops!……I Did It Again.”  Even though now you may have lost your appreciation for the pop princess, her choice of crop tops in the 90s has made a major comeback in fashion. From Alexander Wang to the everyday girl, crop tops are like the Scary Movie franchise: no matter how many are made, they never get old. There was a time when showing your midriff area was only acceptable for thin celebrities in Hollywood. Now with countless stores recreating this 90s staple, anyone in any size can be a crop top fashionista. In fact, I just splurged on some crop tops for the summer. Face it, we all secretly loved crop tops as kids and still do today.

Those Huge Doc Martens

Maybe it’s just me but this is one 90s trend that I can’t seem to pull off. For those who can, this section of the 90s is dedicated to you. Most people don’t know that Doc Martens have been around before Gwen Stefani performed with No Doubt (I bet your older relatives have these albums). First worn in the 1960s by kids trying to set themselves apart from their conservative parents, Docs have made a comeback in the last few years. A day never goes by when I don’t see someone on campus wearing Doc Martens with a floral skirt or some jeans. Not sure who long this fashion comeback will last, but for now…long live the Docs!

Alicia Silverstone and the Knee High Socks

If you don’t know who Alicia Silverstone is, please get to the nearest computer and watch Clueless. Alicia was the queen of plaid skirts and knee high socks in the 90s. Who can forget those knee highs that our parents made us wear to school?  We can thank Gossip Girl for this amazing fashion comeback. In 2010 knee high socks were named as a must-have fashion item. It seems like three years later we still can’t get enough. Unfortunately, this is another trend I have yet to pull off. Something about half my leg being covered and my thighs facing the wind doesn’t sit well with me. Maybe that will change. If Sarah Jessica Parker can pull of knee high socks, then we all need to go get a pair.

Mom Jeans….Oh wait High Waisted Jeans

A few of us like to admit that the high waisted jeans we’ve had an eye on at American Apparel resemble “Mom Jeans.” If you’re lucky your mother (like mine) still has her Mom Jeans in the back of the closet. She knew one day they would make a comeback. Surprisingly, she was right because at least one person you know loves those Mom Jeans…..I mean high waisted jeans. You know you see the resemblance.

Go-To Bodycon

It’s Friday night and I’m trying to get ready for a party before the prices go up after 11pm. When it seems like nothing in my closet is going to work (because obviously I didn’t do laundry that week), I pull out the trusty bodycon dress. Bodycon dresses first came into prominence in the late ’90s, when celebrities were seen wearing these hip-hugging styles on the red carpet and in the decade’s top teen flicks. There isn’t one store you can walk into now and not find a bodycon dress or skirt. It’s a 90s trend that is here to stay. Honestly, not sure what I’d do without my bodycon skirts in every color.

Years from now our children will be laughing at all our old photos. They probably will tell us how bad our fashion taste was. Nevertheless, fashion repeats itself every few decades. Everyone can admit that there is something about the 90s that makes us keep recreating it. We all love a good fashion comeback. As long as no one tries to bring back jellies, then going back to the 90s will always bring a smile to my face.
